Welcome to the all new smart neighborhood

California based builder KB Homes is using smart home technology to help sell its houses. And the company has built an entire community where each home is fully equipped with Apple HomeKit package. The Promenade at Communications Hill is just 20 minutes southeast of Silicone Valley and features a model home that features Homekit compatible locks, lights, and thermostats.

HomeKit is a Apple iOS based software platform that creates a set of rules for your smart devices and connects them to the users Apple device such as an Iphone or Ipad. The mobile device communicates with the smart device using these rules to control them through the Apple based application or Siri voice commands.

While this is the first community to be built around the Apple Homekit, it isn’t the first real estate venture into using smart technology. Earlier this year, Coldwell Banker started selling smart home staging kits to help sellers make their listings and showings more appealing to buyers. Studies are showing that more and more Americans view smart home tech as a sign that a house is move-in ready. Analysts are projecting huge growth in the area of people who consider smart home technology a must have in their new home.

KB’s smart homes will come with a pretty price tag to match all the fancy gadgets they boast. The homes will feature smart locks, lights, thermostats, and ceiling fans. They will also include an Apple TV and an iPad that will control everything. Finally, there is a complimentary concierge service that will help you navigate your new smart home.

All this comes at a cost, starting in the low $900,000 range for a 3 story, 4 bedroom townhouse. Bare in mind, this is in California, where real estate doesn’t come cheap regardless.

Pawport shows off new smart pet door security features at CES 2025
The Pawport pet door installed outside next to a pet mat.

Most smart home gadgets are designed for humans, but the Pawport Smart Pet Door is a bit different. While you can control most of its functions manually, it’s built from the ground up to give your pet an easy way to get in or out of your home -- all while keeping out unwanted guests that might sneak in with traditional pet doors. At CES 2025, the company expanded the system to include a new exterior pet door, creating a two-door system that’s among the most secure pet doors on the market.

Originally shown off at CES 2024, Pawport is a smart pet door that actuates when your pet is trying to leave or enter your home. Using a lightweight waterproof tracker tag and motion sensing, the door (which is installed inside your home) will automatically open when your pet approaches. When it’s not nearby, the door will close to prevent pests, animals, or bad weather from getting inside. The Pawport Smart Pet Door can be mounted indoors over existing pet doors, making it an easy addition to most homes.

Apple might be releasing a HomePod mini 2 in early 2025
homepod mini side top

The HomePod mini first launched in 2020 to mediocre praise. While Apple fans celebrated the bite-sized speaker, other critics pointed out that it lacked the intelligence of its competitors. The main selling point of the HomePod mini is its sound quality; now that so many other smart speakers have rid themselves of the tinny audio that first plagued their launch, Apple will need to step it up if it introduces the rumored HomePod mini 2 next year.

Unfortunately, it seems the planned upgrades aren't that noteworthy, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The new smart home speaker is said to come equipped with Apple's in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip. This would allow the HomePod mini 2 to connect more easily and with greater bandwidth than the current model of HomePod.

This smart display alternative can now use AI to plan all your meals
The Skylight Cal Max installed on a wall.

Skylight is a smart home company that produces a variety of smart display alternatives, such as the Skylight Cal Max. These serve as a central hub for all your daily planning -- they’re primarily used as a digital calendar, but you can also use them to track chores, make lists, or meal prep. That last aspect just became much more exciting, as Skylight is officially introducing Sidekick, an AI-powered assistant that can plan all your meals in just a few minutes.

Sidekick is a new AI feature for Skylight devices. It’s capable of generating personalized recipes based on your budget, family size, and dietary restrictions, and it’ll even create a shopping list and load up step-by-step cooking instructions. Skylight hopes the new feature will save families 10 hours every month, as they’ll no longer need to worry about the logistics surrounding meal prep.
