Machine whips up breakfast for you, took only 1,000 hours to build

Barking mad mechanic made Wallace and Gromit style breakfast machine
Do you find cooking breakfast a bothersome waste of time? If that sounds like your life, you might consider taking on a project similar to the “Sunday Morning Breakfast Machine” just completed by two British men, as reported by Mashable. There’s no reason you couldn’t use it every day — if you had the know-how and time to build it.

Mechanical engineer Peter Browne and airline pilot Mervyn Huggett, both retired and equipped with skills, a sense of humor, and scads of time, took on the Breakfast Machine project. Their purpose, so they say, was to prepare breakfast for their wives on Sunday mornings. (It sounds like they wanted to give their wives a break from weekdays when their wives made breakfast.) So, with Browne’s mechanical skills and Huggett’s knowledge of electronics, they spent approximately 1,000 hours constructing a contraption that would make Rube Goldberg proud.

The machine does it all. First, it delivers the morning paper onto a tray table, rolled up so the sections and pages don’t flutter and separate. Next, water is boiled, poured into a cup, and a tag bag or coffee bag is dipped until the brew is perfect. The cup is then put on the table. Two simultaneous processes soft boil an egg and toast a slice of bread by moving it back and forth over glowing toasting rods. The egg is delivered in an egg cup and the toast on a plate. The last step in the breakfast service is to pull the small table cloth sideways to clear the table.

It’s fun to watch the video and listen to the commentary as the Sunday Morning Breakfast Machine does its thing. One addition we’d like to see is spreading the tablecloth first. We also wonder how the dishes survive being dumped off the side of the table.

Flash Furniture Fundamentals swivel task chair — $90, was $149

This offering from Flash Furniture clearly states that it is task chair and not your typical office chair. Not familiar with the lingo? Task chairs are a subset of office chairs that are made to... well, do tasks in. The thinking goes that office chairs are used primarily for sitting and looking at screens, then doing occasional fits of typing and clicking. The Flash Fundamentals Task Chair, and other task chairs like it, are made for more activity than normal. How does Flash Furniture give you this? It emphasizes quick twists in the 360-degree swivel and a smaller horizontal profile so you can move about with ease through multiple task stations or with multiple workers present. And, of course, there's the nice mesh backing to keep you from getting overheated while doing everything. Try it out for yourself via the button below to see if a task chair is for you.
