Twice as many publishers earned first million on Apple App Store vs Google Play

Apple’s App Store has consistently earned more money for publishers compared to the Google Play Store, and Sensor Tower’s new report reveals that they have a better shot at earning their first million on the App Store compared to Google Play.

In terms of U.S. publishers who earned their first $1 million in net revenue, the number was nearly double for the App Store compared to Google Play in 2018, according to Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence data. A total of 164 publishers achieved the milestone on the App Store, compared to only 88 on Google Play.

The gap was nearly the same last year, when the App Store created 143 first-time millionaire publishers compared to only 71 on Google Play. However, the number only grew by 15 percent for the App Store, lower than the 24 percent increase for Google Play.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of new millionaire publishers on both digital stores were in the gaming category. However, there is a major difference in the breakdown of apps on the App Store compared to Google Play.

The Games category has contributed about 60 percent of the U.S. App Store’s revenue, and 54 of the 164 new millionaire publishers this year, or about 33 percent, were focused on gaming. However, that percentage has declined by 10 percent from last year, as more millionaire publishers came from other categories. The Lifestyle category saw its share grow from 5 percent to 10 percent, while the Health & Fitness category increased from 6 percent to 12 percent.

Meanwhile, on Google Play, the Games category holds a bigger share of contributed revenue at 84 percent, with 57 out of 88 new millionaire publishers, or about 65 percent, focused on this category. While the new millionaire publishers were a bit more spread out among categories on the App Store, they were a lot more focused on gaming on Google Play. No other category had a double-digit percentage for new millionaire publishers, with the second-place category being Social at 6 percent. The trend was mostly unchanged from 2017.

App downloads and revenues have continued to grow for both iOS and Android users, which has been great news for app publishers and developers as they are making more money. Apparently though, they should expect to earn their first million on Apple’s App Store, compared to the Google Play Store.

Despite the controversy, Apple is bringing AI summaries to the App Store
Summarized notifications on Apple iPad mini with A17 Pro.

After all the trouble caused by Apple's AI summaries for news apps like the BBC and the New York Times, Apple is coming back for more. The company has announced that "review summaries" are officially coming to the App Store, aiming to squish the most common points from hundreds or thousands of reviews into one AI-generated summary.

First spotted by Macworld, Apple has announced the coming feature on its developer site. The beta will start in iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 as part of a phased rollout, beginning with English-only summaries for a limited number of apps.

TikTok returns to Apple, Google app stores in U.S.

The TikTok saga continues. Apple reinstated the popular app to the App Store on Thursday evening, and a short while later Google followed suit and put it back on the Play Store. The move came after Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly sent a letter to the tech giants assuring them that they will not face any penalties in relation to a law that banned the app in the U.S. last month.

Both Apple and Google removed TikTok from their respective U.S. app stores on January 18, the day before the law banning the app went into effect. Then, on January 20, newly elected President Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok a 75-day reprieve from the ban to give his administration “an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward.”

Tired of downloading terrible apps? This Google Play Store update will help
A person holding an Android phone while on a bike. The display shows the Google Play Store.

The Google Play Store has an estimated 3.3 million apps available, but they most certainly are not all created equal. Some are no longer updated, some don't work the way they're meant to, and others are just plain terrible — but a new update to the Play Store could make finding the diamonds in the rough much easier.

This update is already live for some users, but it's still rolling out to others. When browsing the Play Store, warnings will appear just below the app information and provide a high-level overview of its performance. For example, it might warn that an app is frequently uninstalled, or the app might not get as much engagement compared to others, according to Android Authority.
