Great deals: $50 off any tablet or computer at Staples

In the market for a new tablet, laptop, or desktop computer? Well, Chris Chavez of Phandroid has found a Staples coupon that gives you $50 off of any of these items, if you purchase them in person at a Staples store. For your convenience, here is the Staples store locater and here is a link to the coupon, which is valid through 7/16/2011 (Saturday). So if you want to take advantage, you’ll have to get moving. We have not tested the coupon, but it does appear to be legitimate and comes directly from Staples.com.

We did a quick perusal of the Staples online catalog. Our recommendations are below, though please do your own ancillary research before purchasing anything. Unfortunately, Staples doesn’t appear to carry the iPad, but it does have most of the major Android tablets, some of which are very good.

Tablets

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: It’s as thin as an iPad
Toshiba Thrive: We’re reviewing this tablet right now, but like the Acer Iconia Tab A500 (also a decent tablet), it has a full USB port, but Toshiba takes its PC qualities further, offering a removable battery, full HDMI port, and full SD card reader.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer: We haven’t spent too much time with this device, but we love the idea of having a tablet that has a good keyboard attached to it. If you’re mostly interested in browsing and light activities like email, this can probably suit most any need you have. With the keyboard, it gets amazing battery life as well.

Laptops

All three of the High Performance laptops from Staples appear to be decent deals, offering 750GB hard drives, 6GB of RAM, and Intel Core i5-i7 processors, which should do you well for the $650-$700. If you want something lighter, there are other options.

Desktops

Not interested in a laptop, huh? Well, there are a few reasonable desktop computers, but pickings are slim. The full list is here.

Samsung's S Pen dreams with the Galaxy Note 7 may have withered with the phone's battery, but thanks to the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 with S Pen, they will not die, at least for 2016.

Staying true to its name, the Tab A 10.1 features a 10.1-inch, 1,920 x 1,200 resolution display, with a 2-megapixel selfie camera above it and an 8MP sensor around back. Below the display is the combination of a physical home button and capacitive multitasking and back buttons that Samsung users have come to know, with the screen incorporating an anti-glare coating to reduce reflections. As for the bottom, they may not be true stereo speakers, but you will find a pair of them nonetheless.

Twitter gets around to launching app optimized for Android tablets….or ‘tablet’

Sure, Twitter HQ must be a busy place always with plenty on its plate, but the fact that it’s only just gotten around to releasing an app optimized for Android tablets will still surprise some people.
Oh, but hang on, it’s not entirely straightforward. You see, the new app is for “a” tablet. That’s one. The Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition.
In a blog post announcing its launch, Twitter senior product manager Michael Ducker runs through some of its features.
“The landscape view fills your screen with tweets, conversations, trends, accounts to follow and more,” Ducker explains. “With a single tap, tweets expand on the right side to show photos, videos and article previews. Dive deeper with another tap to see photos, play videos or read links from the web in fullscreen mode.”
Multi-screen view lets you operate Twitter alongside another app – yes, you’ll be able to create, post, read, and re-tweet tweets with one hand while playing games, browsing the Web or bashing out emails with the other.

A new widget delivers Twitter content direct to the tablet, allowing users to engage with tweets, photos, and videos while also receiving country-specific breaking news, music, sports and photos.
Finally, the new app is open to being drawn all over. Ducker explains: “You can now use Twitter as your canvas to create and tweet colorful illustrations, or you can also draw directly on photos from your photo gallery and share them. The ability to doodle also works with the S-Pen, which is available on the Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition.”
If you’re a Twitter-using, Android-tablet-owning individual without the Note 10.1 (2014), sit tight. The microblogging site promises this is the just the beginning for its tablet-optimized app, with versions for other Android tablets likely “by the end of the year.”

The Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition is the second generation of Samsung's stylus-bearing tablet. While the overall design is similar, there are several improvements under the hood. The display's 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution and wide viewing angles will make it a great multimedia machine. The Multi Window multitasking functionality, S Pen, and new user interface will make it an excellent productivity machine. Like the recently released Galaxy tab 3 line, the Note 10.1 comes with physical Home, Back, and menu buttons. This will make it much easier to rest a hand on it while writing with the S Pen.
