Texting while walking strikes again, girl gets leg stuck in storm drain

Oblivious to her surroundings while engrossed in a texting conversation with her friends, an unnamed Chinese teenager recently walked directly into a storm drain and fell into the metal grating effectively pinning her leg between the metal bars. This incident took place in Mianyang City, in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The girl’s leg was thin enough to slide into the grate, but the bars were slightly bent to widen the opening as well.

Speaking about the incident, a representative for the fire brigade said “We managed to remove the bars and quickly freed her once we arrived at the scene. Her leg was a bit scratched and bruised and numb from being squeezed through the bars, but she quickly recovered and not need hospital treatment.”

Of course, this ordeal is somewhat tame compared to previous texting while walking incidents. During early 2012, a woman walked off a pier into Lake Michigan while trying to text and walk at the same time. Later that year, another texter walked off a cliff while typing a message and fell 60 feet onto rocks below.

Interestingly, a Utah university recently added a texting while walking lane for students glued to their smartphones while walking to class. Specifically, stairs were divided up into three lanes for walking, running and texting. While the lane was originally intended as a joke, the picture of the stairs went viral on the Web and brought attention to the school for the idea of splitting up distracted students into a separate walking lane.

Apple Launch: what to expect from the iPhone SE 4 reveal on February 19
iPhone SE (2022) held in a mans hand.

Apple will launch at least one new product on February 19, 2025. On February 13 Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, sent out a message on the X social network revealing the mystery launch date, but stopped short of saying exactly what the focus of the announcement would be. The note simply said, “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family,” with an animated, shimmering Apple logo attached to it.

Google Messages can now be your notes app. Please don’t do that
The Google Messages app on the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Google Messages recently got an update that allows Android users to use it as a notes app as well as a regular messaging app. This update flew under the radar until Android Authority reported on it last Friday, saying that people can now send long messages, high-quality media, and other content to themselves via RCS messaging, freeing them of the restrictions imposed by its predecessor, SMS messaging. While that is a useful upgrade on paper, it's not a good idea in practice.

A lot of people use messaging apps as a substitute for the original notes app pre-installed in their phones. The problem is text messages sent through RCS are not encrypted, let alone messages sent to yourself, posing a host of security issues. Not long after Apple adopted cross-platform RCS messaging with Android late last year, a group of Chinese hackers called Salt Typhoon launched a cyberattack on U.S. communications networks, leading the FBI and CISA warning Americans to use encrypted messaging platforms, especially if messages are being sent from Apple to Android and vice versa.

Huawei’s wild tri-fold phone finally breaks out of China, and I’m excited
Huawei Mate XT Ultimate

Huawei unveiled the Mate XT Ultimate in China, just a day after the iPhone 16 Pro launch. While Apple introduced incremental upgrades, Huawei has pushed boundaries with an already novel form factor. And now, it’s expanding beyond China—Huawei has announced the world’s first tri-fold phone in Malaysia.

The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate features a 10.2-inch display (2232 × 3184 pixels), which folds into two additional form factors: a 7.9-inch (2048 × 2232 pixels) book-style foldable and a 6.4-inch (1008 × 2232 pixels) slab phone. More importantly, its three-screen mode adopts a 16:11 aspect ratio, offering a better media consumption experience than traditional foldables, which often have a boxy layout that isn’t ideal for videos.
