iPad 2 Digital AV Adapter compatible with other Apple devices

Among yesterday’s big iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 revelations at Apple’s press conference, another new product was announced that has the company’s mobile device users excited: an HDMI Out adapter, aka the Apple Digital AV Adapter.

The iPad 2 doesn’t make the step up to proper high-definition, but it’s got a considerably beefed-up graphics processor. Those who want to use the tablet as a TV-connected device will have the option thanks to this adapter which, like the iPad Camera Connection Kit, connects via the device’s charging port. The $39 attachment outputs video from the iPad 2 at 720p and offers screen mirroring at 1080p.

Apple’s newly posted product page for the just-announced item further reveals that the fun doesn’t stop with the second-gen iPad, however. It also supports the first-gen iPad, the iPhone 4 and the fourth-gen iPod Touch. The adapter only offers a maximum 720p output for these older devices, though the difference between 720p and 1080p is pretty minimal to most viewers’ eyes, especially on displays smaller than 50 inches. It’s going to be tough to complain about slightly less awesome HD output when you’re cruising around the web via your iPhone-to-TV connection.

Apple’s first HomeView hasn't reached customers yet, but the company is reportedly working on a more ambitious version. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a higher-end model with a roughly 9-inch display mounted on a robotic arm that can rotate a full 360 degrees.

The current $299 HomeView is still on preorder, with deliveries beginning November 13. It uses a fixed 7-inch display on a speaker base, and Apple also sells a wall-mounted version.

Hot on the heels of the Welcome Home event, Apple is preparing to launch another batch of new hardware, and we may now have a better idea of when some of it will actually reach stores. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning a retail store “reset” overnight from November 5 into November 6, potentially pointing to a Friday release for at least some of its upcoming Macs.

Earlier reports pointed to an October 27 launch with several Mac updates and a new iPad mini. The lineup could include redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED touchscreens, alongside a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro that keeps the current design but moves to the M6 chip. An updated M6 iMac is also reportedly in the works.
