Pantech shows off 5.9-inch full HD ‘smartphone,’ bigger pockets sold separately

Pantech has announced in South Korea its Vega Number 6, a “smartphone” with a massive 5.9-inch display and full 1080p resolution. The device is not the largest smartphone yet announced, but it is the first ridiculously large one to feature a full HD resolution.

The Vega Number 6 will be featuring a 5.9-inch display at a 1920×1080 pixel resolution, meaning it is the first “phablet” to come with a full 1080p screen, unlike the 720p resolution of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 and Huawei’s Ascend Mate (smaller 5-inch phones like the Droid DNA do have 1080p screens). The device will also be pumped with hardware like a quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and Android Jelly Bean. So far the device is not planned for a release ouside South Korea, and will cost a whopping $780 retail.

As much as we love bigger and better smartphones, this whole “phablet” thing is getting a little out of hand, literally. While the first truly successful “phablet,” the Galaxy Note, clocked in with a 5.3-inch screen, Pantech’s device comes in at more than half an inch larger, and nearly a whole inch bigger than the Galaxy Note is Huawei’s new Ascend Mate, which was showcased back at CES. While we’re not sure if users will be able to fit these devices in their hands, let alone their pockets. But as long as people keep desiring bigger and better phones, manufacturers will meet their demands.

The Honor Magic 6 RSR is my new favorite Android phone of 2024
Someone holding the Honor Magic 6 RSR outside.

There's no doubt that 2024 has already been an exciting year for Android phones. Samsung wowed us with the Galaxy S24 series at the beginning of the year, the OnePlus 12 and 12R are two of the best phones available right now, and Google is expected to impress later this month with the Google Pixel 8a.

But for the last few weeks, I haven't been thinking about any of those phones. Why? Because I've been using the Honor Magic 6 RSR. After launching in China this past March, the Magic 6 RSR is now available in the EU, and that's allowed more folks than ever to get their hands on the phone. And that's great, because the Honor Magic 6 RSR has quickly become my new favorite Android phone of 2024.
