Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
Street Price: $300
The most recent in a long and critically-acclaimed line of Panasonic ultra zooms, the 18X Lumix DMC-FZ35 delights most everyone who uses it and capably handles virtually every facet of photography. It’s not much smaller than an SLR and doesn’t have the same level of sensor, but it’s much less expensive and darned sophisticated.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3
Street Price: $300
There are other compact cameras with longer lenses, but most of them aren’t truly compact. The DMC-ZS3, conversely, fits not only a 12X zoom into its pocketable dimensions, but also a nice 25mm wide angle, a three-inch screen, and enough high-grade mechanics to produce excellent photographs. It’s virtually all automatic though, so fans of manual controls need not apply.

Samsung ST550
Street Price: $320
Samsung took this whole innovation thing to new levels with its just-released ST550. As if a touchscreen with haptic (sensory) feedback wasn’t enough, it also cleverly placed LCDs on both the back and the front of the camera so we can all take hassle-free self portraits. Substandard battery life and price tag aside, this is a pretty nifty digicam.
