Elephant grabs tourist’s camera, takes surprisingly good ‘elphie’

Seems like an elephant at a sanctuary in Thailand has been closely observing selfie shooters visiting his patch. Eager to try out the practice for himself, the animal recently grabbed a visitor’s camera with his trunk and snapped a remarkably impressive self-portrait that’s become known as the world’s first ‘elphie.’

Vancouver resident Christian LeBlanc told CBC News the encounter took place on the Thai island of Ko Phangan. While feeding the elephant a bunch of bananas, LeBlanc set his GoPro to capture continuous shots.

“The elephant loves the bananas, so it kind of gets a bit nosy,” LeBlanc explained. “It grabs at your hands, it tries to take all the bananas. And once we ran out, next thing I knew it was grabbing the GoPro.”

Before he could react, the elephant had the camera at trunk’s length, perfectly positioned for a selfie of himself and LeBlanc.

The photo, we’re sure you’ll agree, is pretty darn good for an elephant, and may have some selfie obsessives wishing they had an appendage of similar length instead to hold their smartphone instead of having to carry around an unwieldy selfie stick.

Realizing he had a unique picture, LeBlanc posted it on his Instagram account where, hardly surprisingly, it quickly went viral.

However, in the wake of the Thai elephant’s selfie-based shenanigans, we’re wondering if the elphie will now spread to become an unstoppable craze among the global elephant community. Will elephants around the world now be snatching cameras from tourists in a bid to grab their very own selfie shots? Or will Roger Federer be set upon by an elephant selfie-seeker after the Swiss tennis star’s next match at the French Open? Er, probably not.

I keep forgetting about the Apple Watch Series 9’s coolest feature
Apps on the Apple Watch Series 9's screen.

I’m just going to come out and say it: I love the Apple Watch Series 9. A couple of weeks ago, I returned to wearing it every day after an extended period of not doing so. And you know what? I was surprised by how much I’d missed it.

But one thing has bothered me this time around: There's a feature I haven't been using. Not because it’s bad, but because I tend to forget it's there.
Effortless to own and wear

The OnePlus 12R is still one of 2024’s best smartphone deals
OnePlus 12R Genshin Impact Edition in hand.

OnePlus is still quite new to me, as I was a lifelong iPhone user until I joined Digital Trends. However, OnePlus has a pretty solid reputation in the mobile world, and now I can see why, as the OnePlus 12 is one of my favorite smartphones that I’ve used so far this year.

But the OnePlus 12 isn’t the only phone that OnePlus launched in 2024. There is also the more affordable value option, the OnePlus 12R, which even comes in a cool Genshin Impact Edition.
