It was announced last year that Marvel would partner with Telltale Games on a new series of episodic adventure games. Now, it’s been confirmed that the project will be based on the Guardians of the Galaxy, the plucky team of interstellar heroes who starred in the third-highest grossing movie of 2014.
The news broke as a result of the ongoing voice actosr strike, which will impact the development of many video games scheduled for release next year. A list of affected titles released by the voice actors’ union, the Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, or SAG-AFTRA, includes the previously unannounced Guardians of the Galaxy: The Video Game, according to a report from Comic Book Movie.
Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the list attributed the Guardians of the Galaxy game to a company operating under the name O’Farrell Enterprises, LLC. Given that the upcoming third season of Telltale’s video game adaptation of The Walking Dead was also attributed to this entity, it was determined that O’Farrell Enterprises is a trade name used by the studio.
The list confirmed pre-existing rumors that Telltale was working on a Guardians of the Galaxy game, according to a report from Eurogamer. Apparently, the title is set to be revealed at the Game Awards on December 1.
It’s not difficult to see why Telltale would get the chance to adapt this particular property. As we saw in Tales from the Borderlands, the team has a knack for blending sci-fi and comedy, Based on the response to the studio’s ongoing Batman adaptation, it’s more than capable of working with superheroes.
When the Marvel-Telltale collaboration was announced in April 2015, a 2017 release date was mentioned. While plans could have changed in the eighteen months since then, it would certainly make sense for the game to be released around the same time that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters in May.
