Lightweight version of the Emporio Armani Connected smartwatch on display at CES

One of the new smartwatches the Fossil Group is showing off at CES 2019 is the third-generation Emporio Armani Connected. The latest release under the Emporio Armani brand features a sleek aluminum case in black with a matching rubber strap. It’s a classic, understated design that will fit in easily in the office, at the gym, or for a night out on the town.

More CES 2019 coverage

We reviewed the original Emporio Armani Connected smartwatch in 2017 and found it stylish, but lacking in the tech features department. The second generation was released in July last year and brought a bunch of useful upgrades. This latest release is very similar to its direct predecessor, with those distinctive horns that extend from the case to grip the strap. It’s also totally waterproof, with a 3 ATM rating, so you can wear it in the pool or shower.

The functionality is much the same. There’s heart rate tracking, so you can keep tabs on your fitness level during workouts and throughout the day. You’ll find support for near-field communication (NFC), so you can use Google Pay. There’s also untethered GPS, allowing you to leave your phone at home and still navigate with your smartwatch and record the distance and route you cover.

It runs Wear OS, so you have access to Google Assistant on your wrist and can install all the best Wear OS apps. It also has a 300mAh battery inside and the magnetic charger will juice it up fully in an hour, but that will likely be a daily necessity.

Sadly, the big internal upgrade you might have expected didn’t make the cut, so you’ll find the aging Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 chip inside. This may have been to keep the cost down, since the third-generation Emporio Armani Connected can be picked up for $345.

The second-generation version was a bit more expensive, but it came with a choice of mono link, Milanese loop, or leather straps and had a stainless steel body. This new release really does feel significantly lighter and it’s sure to suit active people. The watch we tried had a choice of three different Emporio Armani branded watch faces, so you can show off your style credentials.

You can buy the new Emporio Armani Connected smartwatch starting in February.

The Emporio Armani Smartwatch 3 is classy, but costs as much as an Apple Watch
Emporio Armani Connected

Emporio Armani is back with a new smartwatch dubbed the Emporio Armani Smartwatch 3. It's hardly a catchy name, but it joins several new Wear OS smartwatches in bringing features such as a speaker, an updated processor, and a new style.

Despite a thick body -- coming in at 12mm -- the Emporio Armani Smartwatch 3 has a minimalist design with some colorful visual flair. The black 44mm, stainless steel case is flanked with lugs that add a pop of color, including yellow, blue, and silver. There are also a few different band choices, but it's interchangeable too so you can swap in any 22mm strap. On the right edge of the case are three buttons.

Fossil is preparing 5 new designer smartwatches, and we can’t wait to see them
diesel on full guard denim straps news 25 2

New designer smartwatches are coming soon from Fossil, if listings on the FCC’s website are to be believed. Some detective work by droid-life.com suggests the watches will be released under the Diesel, Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, and the Fossil brand names. Fossil is responsible for all these designer smartwatches, along with models from Kate Spade, Skagen, and Misfit.

The FCC is certifying the new watches for use with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and therefore isn’t revealing much about the specifications and nothing about the designs — which are the most important aspects of a smartwatch. What we can see is a selection of model numbers, all of which begin with DW10, followed by another letter that signifies the brand name associated with the watch.

Razer Anzu smart glasses deal knocks $140 off the price tag
The Razer Anzu smart glasses placed on top of an open book.

While smartwatch deals have slowly claimed their place in the mainstream, smart glasses haven't turned out to be as popular. Gaming-focused brand Razer, however, is trying to renew interest in smart glasses with the Razer Anzu, which you can currently purchase from Best Buy at $140 off. If you'd like to give them a try, they're available for just $60, less than half their original price of $200.

There have been failures like the Google Glass and Snap Spectacles, and hopeful attempts like Oppo's Air Glass and Apple's secretive project, but the Razer Anzu smart glasses take a different spin on the wearable device by designing them for indoors. While they come with polarized sunglass lenses, their clear lenses are more useful with their blue light filter, which protects your eyes from screen glare to prevent discomfort even after hours of playing video games or working from home. The smart glasses, which also have a built-in omnidirectional microphone and speakers, may also be more comfortable to wear for an extended period of time compared to headsets and headphones. You'll enjoy smooth, stutter-free sound with the Razer Anzu's low latency audio with a 60ms Bluetooth connection.
