Gears Tactics turns the shooter into an XCOM-style strategy game in 2020

Microsoft announced the Gears of War spin-off Gears Tactics a few years ago, and since then we have learned very little about the very different take on the franchise formula. Now, we know that we won’t be waiting too much longer before we can dive into its gargantuan campaign and start picking our shots. Gears Tactics is out on April 28, 2020, as revealed at The Game Awards 2019.

Set before the main Gears of War series — before Marcus Fenix brought the fight to the Locust horde — Gears Tactics is set at the start of the Locust War. Despite being so early in the war, the game will still feature many of the same weapons the series is known for, including the Lancer assault rifle and the Hammer of Dawn satellite weapon.

The XCOM-style combat in Gears Tactics is turn-based, requiring you to pick your every move carefully to take down enemies efficiently. You can also personalize your characters, and we imagine you’ll be able to name them in order to feel truly terrible when you accidentally get them killed during a routine mission.

The campaign will last more than 40 hours, and those who pre-order the game will receive a special Thrashball Cole character pack as a bonus. The bonus is also awarded to those who get the game via Xbox Game Pass on PC.

Gears Tactics has only been confirmed for PC on the April 28 date, but we have previously heard that it will also be coming to Xbox One. Given that the Halo Wars series and XCOM itself have also been made available on Xbox One, the chances are very high that it will arrive a short time later.

Gears Tactics was far from the biggest announcement Microsoft had to make during The Game Awards. The company also revealed the final design for its next-generation console, the Xbox Series X. It will resemble a PC in its form factor and will come with a new controller, which has a share button so you can easily record your favorite gaming moments.

Microsoft has taken steps to expand the Xbox brand beyond their home console offerings with the Xbox Game Pass subscription service, which gives Xbox One and PC gamers unlimited access to a growing library of games for one price. Also, in addition to Halo: The Master Chief Collection launching on Steam later this year, Microsoft is launching Gears of War 5 and the definitive edition of all three Age of Empires games on Steam.

With the original Xbox Game Pass, subscribers had access to Xbox One and PC games. All of the titles in the library were available on Xbox One and a very limited selection including titles like State of Decay 2 and Forza Horizon 4 are playable on PC. The new Xbox Game Pass for PC will provide an experience better designed for PC gamers, including over 100 PC games on Windows 10.

Another weekend is upon us, and you're probably looking for some games to kill time with over the course of it. We're in a bit of a lull right now ahead of a flurry of releases starting next week, so it's a great time to dip back into the Xbox Game Pass catalog and check out some games that you may have missed. There are three games in particular that I think you should check out this weekend if you're looking for something to play.

One is an unsettling adventure that's getting an Xbox-exclusive sequel later this month. The next is a finely animated roguelike indie that recently made its way to Microsoft's gaming subscription service. Finally, there's a relaxing adventure that gives players a lot of freedom, yet is short enough to beat in a weekend. If you're having trouble deciding what to play this weekend, give one of these games a shot.

3 underrated PS Plus games you should play this weekend (May 3-5)

PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra have been around for almost two years, and during that time the subscription service has established itself as an ample competitor to Xbox Game Pass. That means there is a wealth of great games for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners to check out if they're looking for something to play this weekend. I think PS Plus subscribers should be looking toward some of the more underrated games in the subscription service this weekend too.

I have three particular picks in mind. The first is an enjoyable Metroidvania that came to PS Plus' game catalog when it launched just a couple of weeks ago and deserves a lot more attention than it's getting. After that, there's an action-platformer that pays homage to series like Ninja Gaiden that you should check out before it leaves the catalog. Finally, there's a PS2-era Star Wars game that fills the niche a recently canceled game would have.
