Earlier this month, a rumor appeared online about a new tablet being produced by LG, which had been given the name of the G Pad. A few days later, an LG executive also chatted about a tablet headed our way from the company, and now we’ve got confirmation of the tablet and its name. The news comes from an official teaser video for the device, posted to LG’s own YouTube channel.
It’s another one of those “Interview the person on the street” promos we’ve seen many times before, and this time the question being posed is, “What would make a tablet right for you?” It starts off with tablet owners telling LG why their current slates stay at home, before moving on to what they would change to make them better.
It’s here where the video backfires. Really, all the people are describing a smartphone/tablet hybrid like the LG G2 or the Galaxy Note 2. These regular folk all want a device that’s pocket sized with a full HD screen, that’s quick to open apps, and easy to use out and about. Yep, that’s a phablet. The video ends with confirmation we should expect the LG G Pad 8.3 very soon.
The screen size fits in with previous rumors, and it’s said the resolution will be an excellent 1920 x 1200, matching the latest Nexus 7 tablet. It’s an unusual screen size, and could help the G Pad standout in a very crowded market. But anyone who thinks a tablet that measures at least 8.3-inches is pocket-sized, must own some ridiculous trousers. Powering the tablet could be a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM.
With the appearance of a teaser trailer, it seems certain the LG G Pad will launch during the IFA tech show in Berlin early next month. LG hasn’t set a date for a special event, but may simply choose to reveal it on the show floor, much like Samsung did with the Galaxy Note 8.0 – which is probably going to be one of its major competitors – at Mobile World Congress in February.
Updated on 08/28/2013 by Andy: A Wall Street Journal article has leaked two more spec details for the LG G Pad. Quoting anonymous sources, the G Pad’s quad-core processor could have a clock speed of 1.7GHz, while a 5-megapixel rear camera could also be fitted. The report also backs up the IFA tech show launch, so we’ll look out for it between September 6 and September 11.
