Trade in your current-gen console and get $100 off an Xbox One

A new promotion from the Microsoft retail store offers PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners $100 off an Xbox One if they “recycle” their older consoles. The promotion began on January 23 and runs through March 2, 2014, according to Microsoft.

In order to get the store credit, you must make your way to one of the company’s official retail stores in Canada or the United States. The deal is not eligible online or in other countries, and the $100 credit is specifically for the purchase of an Xbox One.

The deal is open to anyone that brings in a PS3, Xbox 360, or an Xbox 360 E. The trade-in consoles must be in working condition, and cannot be cracked or password protected.

The $100 discount levels the playing field – no pun intended – between the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, at least when it comes to the price. The Xbox One currently retails at $499 prior to the discount, while the PS4 retails for $399.

The price difference hasn’t seemed to significantly hurt the sales of the Xbox One though. Microsoft recently released its Q3 results for the 2014 fiscal year, and it showed that the Xbox One shipped 3.9 million consoles since launch.

Xbox Series S deals -- starting at $275

The Xbox Series S is the less powerful but cheaper option out of the newest generation Xbox line. When comparing the Xbox Series S versus the Xbox Series X, the Series S takes a hit in all the component categories. That means it's not quite as fast. But if you're not hung up on getting the optimal performance out of your system, you'll actually notice very few differences. The two biggest ones are the Series S's inability to play in 8K, and its lack of a disc drive. Most people don't even have 8K TVs, so that shouldn't be an issue. If you're alright with downloading all of your games straight to the console's memory (and you have a separate DVD or Blu-Ray player), the Series S will work fine. It's quite a bit smaller anyway, and easier to fit on a shelf.

While indie video games from smaller developers tend to get more attention on platforms like Steam or Nintendo Switch, that isn't for a lack of trying on Xbox's part. Since 2013, it has run the ID@Xbox program to help fund and highlight games from independent developers all around the world. While some Xbox fans feel uncertain about the platform's future because of Microsoft's multiplatform push, Microsoft reaffirmed its efforts to uplift indie game developers at this year's Game Developers Conference by highlighting some of its upcoming ID@Xbox titles.

At a hands-off presentation held just after GDC, I got a look at several ID@Xbox games coming soon. From more notable games like Still Wakes the Deep from British developer The Chinese Room to small, cozier titles like inKONBINI: One Store, Many Stories from Japanese developer Nagai Industries, these eight ID@Xbox titles are games to watch going forward.

Xbox’s anticipated mid-generation console refresh might be right around the corner. Over the past few weeks, there have been some rumblings that an all-white Xbox Series X may be coming this year. That rumor kicked into second gear when Exputer posted photos it says it received of the device. The leaked images show a standard Xbox Series X with a white casing. The design is about the same, but there’s one key difference: It doesn’t have a disk drive. If the rumors are proven true, that’ll be the system’s selling point, potentially putting it at a lower price point than the current Series X.
