Academy Award winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose, according to sources speaking to Fox News. A friend discovered Hoffman’s body in a West Village apartment in New York City with a needle in his arm. He was reportedly alone at the time.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone,” Hoffman’s family said in a statement. “This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

The 46-year-old actor was the recipient of numerous awards and nominations for his performances on both stage and on film. Hoffman was nominated for four Academy Awards throughout his career, which stretches back to 1991. He won the Best Actor Oscar in 2005 for his portrayal of Truman Capote in the film Capote.

The actor recently completed work on the films God’s Pocket, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. He was currently filming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, in which he has a significant role. It’s unclear at this time how much of his filming was complete.

In 2012, Hoffman began struggling with a drug addiction after 23 years of sobriety. In May 2013, he checked himself into a rehab clinic for heroin.

The actor is survived by his longtime girlfriend, costume designer Mimi O’Donnell, with whom he had a son and two daughters.

Update: Hoffman had completed shooting on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, and had just seven days of shooting left on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, according to Comingsoon.net.
