Apple is making it easier to spot apps built for its first foldable phone. A new “Made for iPhone Duo” badge will appear on App Store product pages for apps and games optimized for the device.

Curated app and game collections will arrive on Friday, October 23, when the iPhone Duo launches in select markets. The new badge will help you find apps that take advantage of that giant screen on iPhone Duo.

What can these apps do with the Duo’s bigger screen?

Apple hasn’t shown exactly what the badge will look like, but it did share several examples of how apps are putting the Duo’s inner and outer screens to good use. For instance, Netflix has optimized its app to let you browse short clips on the outer display before fully opening the Duo to watch shows and movies on the larger inner screen.

Prime Video takes a different approach. It keeps content on top while showing cast details and bonus info on the bottom when the Duo is partially folded.

Productivity apps are also getting redesigned, with Microsoft Word and Outlook offering what Apple calls a desktop-class experience by placing formatting tools beside your document or your full inbox next to an open email.

Meanwhile, Zoom uses the inner display to display shared content and other participants side by side. Other apps such as Slack, Salesforce, NYT Cooking, Yelp, and travel apps will also use the extra space to show more information at once.

Does the new badge mean every app is ready?

Not quite. Apple says more app updates will arrive throughout the year. Apps that are already optimized for iOS 27 may adjust automatically to the inner screen, though they won’t feel as tailored as dedicated layouts.

Since the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and is already sold out through January, developers may not feel much urgency to optimize right away. However, Apple’s new badge should help buyers find software designed for its foldable form factor. How polished that experience feels will still depend on how much work developers put into their apps.

Smartphone-connected drinking water safety sensor Featured

What if checking your drinking water for dangerous chemicals were as simple as plugging a tiny gadget into your smartphone? Researchers in Japan have developed a compact sensor that could make that possible, potentially bringing sophisticated water contamination testing out of expensive laboratories and into people's hands.

Scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) have created a portable device capable of detecting extremely low concentrations of PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals." The findings were published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics, which demonstrate how an inexpensive sensor and a smartphone could make identifying potentially harmful chemicals in water a lot easier.

Samsung might have a Galaxy Z Fold 9 for everyone, and I’m losing count
Samsung's 2027 foldable lineup is getting packed
Electronics, Speaker, Mobile Phone

Samsung's foldable lineup could be getting pretty crowded next year. We're already expecting successors to the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8, while fresh leaks hint that several more devices could be in the pipeline.

The expanded lineup might include a bigger fold, a potentially cheaper alternative, and even something that slides rather than folds. According to a new leak, Samsung is currently testing two different versions of an additional wide-format Galaxy Z Fold 9. That's not all, Samsung's foldable plans could feature a grand total of six models, which is kind of in line with earlier reports.
