Chevrolet has discreetly confirmed the Tahoe and Suburban (pictured) will gain an off-road-focused trim level called Z71 before the end of the year.
Chevrolet is keeping additional details under wraps for the time being, but sources close to the automaker indicate most of the components included in the trim level will be sourced directly from the Silverado Z71. That means both SUVs will boast a heavy-duty suspension setup with trail-ready monotube Rancho shocks, a pair of recovery hooks up front and a skid plate that protects the transfer case.
Z71 models will come standard with Chevrolet’s Hill Descent Control technology and an automatic locking rear differential that will improve traction in rough conditions.

Visually, Chevrolet’s Z71 SUVs will stand out from their less capable siblings thanks to trim-specific 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped by all-terrain tires, a more premium-looking radiator grille, a redesigned front bumper as well as special graphics and emblems on both ends. Larger alloy wheels will be available at an extra cost.
The cockpit is expected to carry over with only minor modifications. Z71 models will come relatively well-equipped in order to help justify their higher price.
Chevrolet will fully detail and price the Z71-equipped Tahoe and Suburban in the coming weeks.
