Updated: Chrome OS hits the big time with Acer’s spacious Chromebook 15

Acer’s Chromebook 15 is the largest to date, and the first to accommodate a fifth-generation Intel Core M processor based on the Broadwell micro-architecture. We’re talking a Core i3-5005U. That doesn’t sound like a powerhouse, but it should be good enough to beat most of the Chromebook competition. Alternatively, the Acer Chromebook 15 can be had with an Intel Celeron 3205U chip (also based on Broadwell).

Choice is the word du jour in the display department too, with two Full HD options offered (one with wide viewing angles, so presumably an IPS panel), and one sporting a more mundane 1,366 x 768 resolution to reduce the price. The usable screen real estate measures 15.6 inches in all three cases, and all three have an anti-glare coat.

We don’t think we need to point out why a larger panel makes for a better computing experience, but let’s hope portability was also taken into account here. At first glance, this big guy doesn’t look all that different from its 13-inch precursors, although the overall profile is slightly chunkier. The battery is rated at eight hours, which is less than Acer’s current 13-inch Chromebook, but quite good for an inexpensive laptop.

The features include two large speakers that face directly towards the user for better audio quality, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB 3.0. All in all, this clearly has the works of the best sub-$1,000 Chromebook around. The question is how low can Acer go with the price?

The Omen 40L has a lot of configurations to pick from, and while they aren't all a great deal, this one starts on an excellent foundation. At the heart of the build is an RTX 4060, an excellent 1080p GPU that should handle most modern games just fine with high graphical fidelity and above 100 frames per second. That said, you can do quite a few upgrades in the Customizer, and probably one of the better options would be the RTX 4060 Ti for an extra $160, although if you're willing to spend all of the discount, you could also potentially go for an RTX 4080 for $990.

You could potentially upgrade to a touch version of the screen for $30, but since it would knock the resolution down to 1600 x 900, it's not worth it, especially with a larger 17.3-inch screen. What will be worth the upgrade is taking the networking option from the Wi-Fi5 and Bluetooth 4.2 standard up to the Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 standard for an extra $20, which will make sure your laptop has a strong connection for streaming or doing online meetings and will be future-proof for at least the next 5-6 years.
