A remake of the iconic 1994 gothic action film The Crow has been in the works for quite a while now, featuring a revolving door of stars temporarily attached to the lead role. Recently, with the project nearing its intended start of production, stand-out Boardwalk Empire actor Jack Huston has reportedly been cast as the film’s tortured hero, Eric Draven.
During an interview with Dread Central at the recent Lexington Comic and Toy Convention, The Crow creator James O’Barr confirmed Huston’s casting and offered a few more details about the long-awaited project that will bring his supernatural superhero back to the big screen.
“Jack Huston has definitely been cast,” said O’Barr, who added that he was “really happy with that choice.”
Claiming the film is expected to begin shooting “in a couple of months,” O’Barr also indicated that Downton Abbey actress Jessica Brown had been cast as Eric Draven’s girlfriend in the film — an ill-fated character whose murder is the driving force behind Eric’s resurrection, and quest for vengeance. In the original film, Draven is a musician, brought back from the dead to avenge the brutal murder of his girlfriend at the hands of local thugs.
That film famously starred Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee’s son, who met his own ill-fated end in a tragic accident when he was accidentally shot on set.
According to O’Barr, much of the new film’s cast will be British, along with director Corin Hardy (The Hallow) and an unidentified actor from HBO’s Game of Thrones that has yet to be revealed. Despite the British cast and the decision to shoot the film in Belgium, the movie will still be set in Detroit like its source material.
O’Barr also said he’ll have input on the soundtrack for the film, which will include songs by Joy Division that were referenced in the original comic book he created. If the film is successful, O’Barr hopes to see sequels based on some of the comic-book sequels that presented different versions of The Crow throughout time.
There’s currently no release date set for The Crow remake.
