Twisted Metal, Grow Home free in September for PlayStation Plus members

Sony has announced September’s multiplatform freebies for PlayStation Plus members, naming the first featured game chosen by popular vote among its playerbase.

Ubisoft’s Grow Home edged out Armello and Zombie Vikings in Sony’s recently concluded “Vote to Play” campaign, and will launch at the beginning of September as a free game for PlayStation 4 owners with an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

Also featured for September on PlayStation Plus is Teslagrad, a 2D platformer from indie developer Rain Games. Originally released for PC platforms, Teslagrad puts players on a treacherous quest to climb the abandoned Tesla Tower, avoiding the numerous traps scattered throughout. The PlayStation 3 version of Teslagrad will additionally be available as a free download starting in September as part of the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection.

PS4 and PS Vita owners share another pair of games featured in September’s PlayStation Plus lineup, including Capy Games’ side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter Super Time Force Ultra and Xeodrifter, an exploration-based 2D platformer from Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid.

Over on the PlayStation 3, PS Plus subscribers can expect to receive a free copy of Sony’s car combat game Twisted Metal. A revamped take on a landmark PSone series, Twisted Metal features competitive, destructive gameplay in which players drive heavily armed vehicles solo or with a co-op buddy in the Calypso’s Tournament campaign mode. Twisted Metal additionally offers several online modes that support up to 16 simultaneous players.

The PS Vita-exclusive La Mulana EX caps off September’s offerings, promising a difficult side-scrolling adventure in the vein of Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and other genre classics. An homage to the challenging platformers released for MSX home computers in the 1980s, La Mulana EX features both brain-teasing puzzles and boss encounters that demand fast reflexes.

Though Grow Home emerged as the month’s featured PlayStation Plus release, runners-up Armello and Zombie Vikings will launch at a 30 percent discount for service subscribers in the coming weeks.

It’s a sign that Sony is getting more aggressive about building a dedicated PlayStation ecosystem, Apple-style. It doesn’t just want you to buy Sony consoles, but all of the black-and-white accessories that go with them too.

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan is retiring after 30 years. The PlayStation boss will formally leave his role in March 2024 with a successor yet to be named.

Jim Ryan has been working with PlayStation since 1994 when he joined Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe. Since then, he's become the key figurehead for the PlayStation brand, similar to Phil Spencer's role within Xbox. His most recent success has come from the launch of the PlayStation 5, which has already surpassed a 40 million unit milestone. Today, Sony announced that Ryan plans to retire from the role.
