Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long for the announcement, which is scheduled to happen at 1PM (EST) on September 23, and will coincide with Pebble CEO Eric Migicovsky’s appearance at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2015 conference. He may also take the opportunity to announce the release of firmware 3.0 for the original Pebble, which is already available on the Pebble Time and Time Steel.
The last time a Pebble countdown timer reached zero, in February this year, we were introduced to the Time and Time Steel on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign managed to gain over $20 million in funding, but there were reports the company was struggling to stay afloat even with the surge in popularity.
A new smartwatch isn’t the only new announcement Pebble may make. We’re are also hoping the company provides more details about the third-party strap store, which was announced earlier this year. Originally expected to launch alongside the Time and Time Steel, nothing has been heard about it since. Additionally, the SmartStrap SDK is still available for engineers to try out, but so far no strap has been added to the accessories page.
All this may help Pebble stay relevant in the rapidly expanding world of wearables, with the announcement coming just a few weeks after Apple announced new bands and a partnership with Hermes for the Apple Watch, and Samsung’s excellent Gear S2 — our favorite wearable launched at IFA 2015. Both put pressure on Pebble to deliver something interesting this week.
