Disney and Pixar set release dates for Cars 3 and Incredibles 2, push back Toy Story 4

Disney has been shuffling around its release calendar, and there’s good and bad news for fans of its collaborations with Pixar. On the bright side, Cars 3 and The Incredibles 2 each got a release date, but those eagerly awaiting Toy Story 4 will be sad to know that its will now hit theaters later than expected. Woody, Buzz, and the gang had to give up their June 16, 2017 release date for Lightning McQueen and crew.

Each of the three computer-animated films will get a June release, which is perfect for all of the kids who will be kicking off their summer vacations. Cars 3 leads the pack with its 2017 date, and then Toy Story 4 will hit theaters almost exactly a year later, on June 15, 2018. Incredibles 2 will follow on June 21, 2019.

Squeezed in between familiar franchises is another Disney and Pixar movie, Coco, set for Nov. 22, 2017. However, Disney also scheduled release dates for numerous non-Pixar films, including Marvel projects. Ant-Man and the Wasp, the sequel to this year’s Ant-Man, is now scheduled for July 6, 2018. The date was previously occupied by Black Panther, which has been moved forward to Feb. 16, 2018. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel was delayed from Nov. 2, 2018 to March 8, 2019, and three other still untitled Marvel flicks were slated for 2020.

Mixed in with its superhero movies and animated films, Disney also has multiple untitled films on the calendar. As we can see, they may still get shuffled around, but the current calendar gives us an idea of at what the studio has planned for the foreseeable future. Clearly, there’s a lot for fans to look forward to.

This is sure to be an unusual year for Hollywood cinema. With the regular cadence of franchise blockbusters disrupted by the Hollywood strikes of 2023, there are fewer surefire bets at the box office. And some of the studios’ supposedly safer gambles, like Madame Web and Argylle, have already fallen flat upon release. Of course, this doesn’t mean there hasn’t been anything worth seeing in theaters or streaming at home.
In addition to a few standout franchise entries, the year to date has seen a number of terrific smaller-scale dramas, horror flicks, and indie comedies, many of them by debuting filmmakers. With luck, the relative lack of competition for audience attention will allow one or more underdogs to make a big cultural splash.
