Chloe Grace Moretz, best known for starring roles in black superhero comedy Kick-Ass, will star in Working Title and Universal’s live-action take on The Little MermaidLove, Actually’s Richard Curtis is “in talks” to write the script, according to Variety, but little else is known about the upcoming feature based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 19th century Danish fairy tale. The flick is likely in good hands though, as its production company Working Title’s recent credits include Senna, Anna Karenina, and Les Misérables.

Moretz, now 18, got her film breakthrough as a 7 year-old child actor in the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror. In addition to significant roles in Kick-Ass and its sequel, she has appeared in a variety of films, including 2013’s Carrie, Tim Burton’s Dark ShadowsIf I StayThe Equalizer, and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo

Considering Moretz’ extensive experience in drama and horror (and the fact that Universal, rather than Disney, picked up the film), Moretz’ casting as the titular character may hint that this upcoming reinterpretation is more in line with the original, darker tale than Disney’s 1989 animated feature film.

“[The films that I’ve worked on] have pretty heavy subjects,” explained Moretz to Time last year in an interview promoting the romantic drama If I Stay.  “Acting for me is not just being happy-go-lucky. That’s my real life. Acting for me is doing the opposite of who I am.”

Other upcoming roles for Moretz include Shane Carruth’s third film The Modern Ocean, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, and biographical drama Brain on Fire.

Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger will executive produce alongside Working Title producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. After Sofia Coppola left the project because of “creative differences,” the producers haven’t yet announced a new director.

The Little Mermaid’s release date hasn’t been announced yet.

3 sci-fi movies on Peacock you need to watch in May
Vin Diesel and Karl Urban in Riddick.

Peacock does many things well, but its sci-fi section is sorely lacking. The science fiction films on Peacock are almost entirely comprised of knockoff blockbusters or embarrassingly bad B-movies. And instead of having a permanent library of Universal Pictures' sci-fi hits like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial or Back to the Future, Peacock's best science fiction movies tend to come and go inside of a month.

So for this month, when we say that these are the three sci-fi movies on Peacock that you need to watch in May, it's because they probably won't be around in June! Our first two picks fall into the realm of sci-fi action, while the third stands as a tribute to the late B-movie king Roger Corman.

If you have to watch one Tubi movie this May 2024, stream this one
Two people stand in a mountain valley in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

More than almost any other streaming service, the past lives on at Tubi. Some of that is by necessity, since the bigger streamers sweep up most of the contemporary box office hits, and almost every major studio in Hollywood has its own streaming service. While there are some modern films and TV shows on Tubi, it also has a robust lineup of movies and series that pretend like cinematic and television history began in the '80s. These older titles need a home, and Tubi has given it to them.

However, our pick for the one Tubi movie that you have to watch in May isn't that old, relatively speaking. Director Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon caused a cultural sensation in 2000, not unlike the way Everything Everywhere All at Once did in 2022 on its way to earning Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress honors for Michelle Yeoh. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon also features Yeoh in a leading role during an earlier period of her career, and the film was also an Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Score. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but came up short there.
