Television Producer and Writer, Shonda Rhimes, will continue to dominate ABC’s Thursday night lineup, as her primetime trio of shows, which have lovingly led to the creation of the “TGIT” acronym by fans, have all been renewed. That includes Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away With Murder.

Each of the three shows deals with hot topics in TV today: medicine with Grey’s, politics with Scandal, and law with How to Get Away With Murder.

Grey’s Anatomy has been a ratings winner since it launched in 2005, consistently grabbing the 18-34 and all-female demographics. It is the show that arguably put Rhimes on the map. And is somewhat an anomaly in today’s TV drama world, managing to make it past the 10-year mark and more cast swaps and deaths that we can imagine, and still going strong. This fall marks the show’s 13th season.

Meanwhile, Scandal, which focuses on political “fixer” Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) is wrapping up its fifth season, and has been well-received among both viewers and critics. The show, and Washington herself, hav received nominations for Emmys, Golden Globes, and more. How to Get Away With Murder, the latest success story for “Shondaland,” just launched in 2014 and is in its second season. The show, which looks at morally-questionable lawyer and law professor Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and her team of students, made Davis (The Help, Suicide Squad) a bona fide television star. For that role, she won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first African-American woman to receive the award.

TGIT represents the perfect trifecta to keep drama lovers entranced. And Rhimes will soon be keeping her dominant status going all-year round, with a new series that will take the place of How to Get Away with Murder when its current season ends. Called The Catch, the first episode, which is already being heavily promoted, will debut on March 24.

In related news, ABC has renewed several other series, including a number of other dramas like Quantico, Once Upon a Time, and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But apparently, when it comes to Thursday nights, it’s Shonda’s world. We’re just living in it.

Netflix has generally weathered the aftermath of the 2023 Hollywood strikes better than its streaming rivals. However, Netflix's lineup in May looks significantly weaker than in the recent past. There's a distinct lack of blockbuster movies from other studios. Even Netflix's original series are slowing down this month. The most significant arrival is Bridgerton season 3, and Netflix is splitting that season into two parts, making fans wait until June to get some closure.

There are other highlights, including Jerry Seinfeld's Unfrosted, Blood of Zeus, and the complete run of the animated spy comedy Archer. But compared to the shows and movies that Netflix had earlier in 2024, it's really lackluster.
