Hulu asks for more of addictive cult-thriller The Path

hulu renews the path for season 2 trailer still
Hulu/YouTube
Hulu has already given the green light to a second season of its new original series The Path, which stars Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Michelle Monaghan (True Detective, Source Code.)

The show follows a man (Paul) who starts to have second thoughts about his life as part of a religious cult. The 10th and final episode of its inaugural season will air May 25. The show debuted on the streaming site at the end of March with the first two episodes, followed by a new episode each week thereafter.

Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) rounds out the stellar main cast as Cal Roberts, the unofficial “leader” of the Meyerist Movement, which follows the fictional Meyerism religion. Monaghan’s character, Sarah Lane, was born into the movement, while Paul’s character, Sarah’s husband, Eddie, is Meyerism convert who’s starting to question its beliefs. Also featured in recurring roles are Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), Kathleen Turner (Romancing the Stone, Californication), and Max Ehrich (Under the Dome).

It’s easy to see the parallels between the show’s premise and Hollywood darling religion Scientology. The latest controversy surrounding Scientology, including the recent defection of actress Leah Remini and the father of David Miscavige, the movement’s leader, likely contributed to interest in the storyline. Metacritic reports a generally favorable reception for the show thus far, with a score of 70 based on 33 reviews; and RottenTomatoes scores it at an 80 percent (86 percent for audience score.)

The Path was created by Jessica Goldberg (Parenthood), who also serves as executive producer alongside Jason Katims and Michelle Lee of True Jack Productions.

Hulu is revealing its full 2016-17 programming lineup at its upfront presentation, which will be held in New York City today.

There’s no word yet on when season two of The Path will be available.

Netflix debuts first teaser trailer for Cobra Kai season 6
The cast of Cobra Kai.

Netflix has grand plans for the final run of Cobra Kai, including the longest season to date with 15 episodes. But the downside of that news is that Cobra Kai season 6 is being split into three parts, and the last batch of episodes is being held back until 2025. In the meantime, the first teaser trailer for Cobra Kai season 6 has arrived. And while the trailer is light on story details, it's good to see the students of Johnny and Daniel's combined dojo training together again.

According to Netflix's official synopsis for the final season, the story picks up after Cobra Kai's dojo and franchises have been eliminated from the Valley. Now, Johnny, Daniel, and Chozen have to decide whether they will send their students to compete in the Sekai Taikai, which is "the world championships of karate."

7 best Nicolas Cage sci-fi movies, ranked
Two men point guns at each other in Face/Off.

With well over 100 movies to his name since his screen debut in 1982, Nicolas Cage is one of the most prolific actors of his generation. And while Cage has appeared in many rom-coms, thrillers, and dramas, he's only occasionally accepted roles in sci-fi movies. Even with Cage's direct-to-video era, there just aren't many science fiction movies to choose from.

Since Cage has a sci-fi adjacent postapocalyptic horror flick called Arcadian currently available on VOD, we've decided to throw the spotlight on the seven best Nicolas Cage sci-fi movies. However, you should keep in mind that Cage isn't always the best judge of what is or isn't a great movie. That's why this list would be very different if it was about the seven best Nicolas Cage movies. In fact, only our top choice would be on both lists.
