Canon 1-DX II shooters beware, using SanDisk cards could corrupt your photos

Canon’s latest flagship DSLR has only been shipping for a few weeks, yet the company confirmed today a second compatibility issue. When using the 1D-X Mark II with SanDisk CFast cards, the bottom portion of the image is corrupted on the last few images shot before the camera powers off. Earlier this month, Sigma also confirmed a compatibility issue with an odd overlap being added to images in playback mode on certain lenses.

Canon said earlier today that the second glitch is an issue with the card — not the camera — and SanDisk confirmed the issue is inside the CFast cards, which some stores have been bundling with the aD-X Mark II, including Canon’s online store for customers in the UK.

The companies have already come together for a solution, however, and a new firmware update will correct the card issue, available early next month.

In the meantime, since the issue appears only in images shot before the camera powers off, Canon suggests shooting extra photos before powering the camera off — users need to fill up 16MB of space to avoid the corruption on essential photos, which is about one RAW photo or three high-quality JPEGs. Auto-off also triggers the glitch, as well as removing the battery or opening the memory card slot.

The corruption occurs only with still images, Canon says, but with both RAW and JPEGs. The corruption appears in the bottom right corner of RAW files and the lower third of JPEGs, and only with the CFast cards, not SanDisk CF.

The cards that are effected by the glitch include all models with these product numbers, with the “x” number varying based on where the cards were sold:

Updated on July 9, 2016 by Gannon Burgett: Canon has issued a firmware update that addresses the above image corruption problem that occurred when shooting with certain SanDisk CFast 2.0 cards. Canon notes that if you suffered from the corruption issue that you should format the problematic CFast card using the updated camera firmware.
