Dell Aero to Become AT&T’s Second Android Phone

AT&T has announced that the Dell Aero—a renamed version of the Dell Mini 3—will become the carrier’s second Android-based smartphone, following on the heels of the Motorola Backflip. The move carriers through on AT&T’s promises back in January that it would be bringing five Android-based phones to its service during the first half of 2010…including one from Dell.

Dell has previously launched the Mini 3 in Brazil and China, but the debut on AT&T will be the first time a Dell smartphone has been available in the U.S. market. If the phone succeed with consumers, the mobile segment could turn into a significant business for Dell, which has been seeing its share of the U.S. and worldwide computer markets continually eroded over the last few years, being overtaken by both Hewlett-Packard and Acer worldwide.

AT&T has not announced any specifications, pricing, or availability dates for the Dell Aero, noting only that the device will feature a “beautiful custom user interface developed by Dell and AT&T.” Dell previously characterized the Mini 3 as an “initial” offering in what the company anticipated would be a broad line of mobile devices.
