Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Joins Android Fray

Struggling phone maker Sony Ericsson has made its first move into the Android camp, today announcing the Xperia X10, a new Android-based phone that features a new user experience that the company plans to roll out and develop across its entire phone portfolio. And the Xperia X10 definitely packs the features, including an 8.1 megapixel camera, assisted GPS, and a 4-inch color TFT touchscreen display.

“The Xperia X10 and the family of phones launching in the first half of 2010 underpin our commitment to an open and multi-platform strategy that maximizes choice for the consumer and delivers the best possible consumer experience,” said Sony Ericsson president Bert Nordberg, in a statement. “The reaction from our global operator partners to the Xperia X10 has been extremely positive.”

Part of the Xperia X10’s new user experience is something called TimeScape, a centralized interface for all communications needs, including text messages, photos, email, and updates from social networking services like Facebook and Twitter. The phone also features a MediaScape service that brings together the phone’s onboard and online media capabilities (including, of course, local media and popular sites like YouTube), and the phone features an “infinite button” that lets users aggregate all their interactions with a single person into one view, whether those be text messages, phone calls, or updates from the Internet.

The Xperia X10 also packs high-end features, including an 8.1 megapixel video-capable camera (with a 16× digital zoom, geotagging, and smile detection), stereo Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless networking, assisted GPS, a 4-inch 480 by 854-pixel high-resolution touchscreen display, microSD storage (an 8 GB card will come with the phone), and (of course) the full panoply of Google-based applications and features…plus access to the Android Marketplace.

The Xperia X10 will support GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 900/1700/2100, and UMTS HSPA 800/850/1900/2100, making it operable in a wide range of worldwide markets. And that’s the rub: Sony Ericsson hasn’t released any pricing information, but the company isn’t planning to introduce the Xperia X10 until the first quarter of 2010; although the phone will be landing in Japan, the company is running a risk of missing the first huge wave of interest in Android devices and coming along after the holiday buying season as an also-ran product. But still, with that camera and a high-resolution screen, it’s a good bet some high-end phone enthusiasts will give the Xperia X10 some serious consideration.

Alleged renders of the Xperia 10 IV have been leaked, and from the looks of it, Sony’s next midrange phone will again put design in the back seat. The aesthetics are not an eyesore by any means, but the design is definitely stale. One might argue with the ‘"if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it" mentality here, as Sony's strategy is just hard to digest at this point. The leaked Sony Xperia 10 IV renders — which come courtesy of @OnLeaks and Zouton — show a phone that looks identical to its predecessor.

The only noticeable change relates to the flat sides on the upcoming device, which veers from the curved side profile on the Xperia 10 III. Apple pulled a similar stunt a couple of years ago. The company took the iPhone 11’s base design, flattened its bulging sides, and created the iPhone 12. It was a lazy design makeover, but Apple also tweaked the camera island’s dimensions, made the lenses look bigger, and introduced some new color. Overall, the change was noticeable.

Garmin today introduced a new smartwatch aimed at pilots and people who love flying. With the Garmin D2 Air X10, a successor to the older D2 Air, the company has built a typical smartwatch experience with a discrete aviation mode that builds in features that pilots would find necessary as well as added a little extra on the top.

The Garmin D2 Air X10 has one major upgrade over the previous D2 Air model -- the inclusion of voice functionality. Allowing pilots to keep their hands free while on the go, the D2 Air X10 can now be used in tandem with your phone's digital assistant, (Siri or Google Assistant depending on whether you use iOS or Android) to dictate texts and ask the typical queries you'd want to know as an air enthusiast. With a starting price of $550, it's probably worth considering if the existing Garmin D2 Air is a better fit with its $500 price point.

Sony is finally bringing the Xperia 5 III to the U.S. market, eight months after the phone was officially introduced to the world. Sony phones and delayed releases have been somewhat of a recurring theme lately. The $2,500 Xperia Pro 5G was launched in February of 2020 but only arrived in January of 2021. The Xperia 1 II flagship also took a few sweet quarters before making it stateside.

The latest case of a delayed Sony phone is the Xperia 5 III. It’s not a bad phone. Actually, far from it. It just doesn’t belong to the year 2022, especially with that handsome $1,000 asking price. It will be available unlocked from authorized retail partners, but only in its Frosted Black trim. If you’re eyeing the stunning green color, only the official Sony online store has it.
