Top 10 Twitter trends for 25 billion tweets in 2010

Despite the fact that there are 18 days left in the year, Twitter has released its top 10 trending topics of the year, and a bunch more in different categories. According to the social network’s blog post, 25 billion tweets were sent in 2010. Sadly, though I tweeted my Bieber fever on a regular basis, the young woman only ranked eighth on this year’s big chart. Above Bieber? Android, iPad, the World Cup, vuvuzelas, an oil spill, an earthquake, and Inception. Now that I’ve properly spoiled it, here is the top 10.

Twitter top 10 trending topics of 2010:

  1. Gulf Oil Spill
  2. FIFA World Cup
  3. Inception
  4. Haiti Earthquake
  5. Vuvuzela
  6. Apple iPad
  7. Google Android
  8. Justin Bieber
  9. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows
  10. Pulpo Paul

The most talked about technology topics are mostly predictable, but worth a gander:

  1. Apple iPad
  2. Google Android
  3. Apple iOS
  4. Apple iPhone
  5. Call of Duty Black Ops
  6. New Twitter
  7. HTC
  8. RockMelt
  9. MacBook Air
  10. Google Instant

Oddly, Twitter did not give video games a category, despite building one for movies and television. It makes sense that Black Ops made the list though. The game sold 8.4 million copies in November alone, making it the fastest selling game of all time. Some of the films on the most talked about movie list didn’t do as well.

Top 10 Twitter trends for ‘Movies:’

  1. Inception
  2. Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows
  3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
  4. Despicable Me
  5. Karate Kid
  6. The Last Airbender
  7. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse
  8. The Expendables
  9. The Chronicles of Narnia
  10. Paranormal Activity 2

Surely billions of tweets were sent in an effort to figure out Inception, but many were also sent trying to understand why Scott Pilgrim vs. the World bombed despite being amazing and why The Last Airbender managed to do well despite it being one of the worst films of the year.
