Honor’s sleek new MagicBook Pro packs the AMD Ryzen 5 4600 processor

IFA 2024
This story is part of our coverage of IFA Berlin 2024

While doubt continues to hang over its smartphone business due to restrictions in the U.S., no such problems seem to dog Honor’s laptop business, as the brand has launched three new models, the MagicBook Pro and updated versions of the MagicBook 14 and MagicBook 15. All three use AMD’s Ryzen 5 processors and feature sleek designs.

The MagicBook Pro, unveiled at IFA 2020, is the top-of-the-range model with a 16.1-inch Full View screen surrounded by a 4.9mm bezel. It boasts a 90% screen-to-body ratio, plus 100% sRGB color gamut at 300 nits brightness and flicker-free performance. The sandblasted aluminum chassis is 16.9mm thick and weighs 1.7 kilograms.

Inside is AMD’s Ryzen 5 4600H processor with an integrated Radeon graphics card, and the laptop can be specified with up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a 512GB SSD. Honor promises the MagicBook Pro will keep cool under pressure thanks to its dual-fan and dual-heat pipe cooling system design, while the battery will return 11 hours of use before needing a recharge. A 65-watt fast-charging system boosts the cell to 50% in about 30 minutes. Other features include a fingerprint sensor set inside the power button, a pop-up webcam inside one of the function keys, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB Type-C port, and an HDMI port too.

The MagicBook Pro is joined by a new MagicBook 14 and MagicBook 15 laptop, which retain the same design as the models released earlier this year, but with new AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processors and the option for a 512GB SSD. Otherwise, these lightweight, low-cost laptops remain the same, but that’s no bad thing.

The MagicBook 14 weighs only 1.38kg and the MagicBook 15 1.53kg. Due to the slim bezels, the screen-to-body ratio for each one is high — 84% for the MagicBook 14 and 87% for the MagicBook 15. All three new Honor laptops have Windows 10 installed and come with a one-month Microsoft Office free trial.

Honor has not announced the price for any of its new laptops yet, or where they will be released. Previously, the MagicBook 14 started at 499 British pounds, or about $667, making it a good value. Expect them to be available in the U.K. and Europe, but not the U.S. unless you’re willing to import one. We’ll update this story when Honor confirms the prices.

Trump Administration wants the US to produce the ‘most powerful’ AI chips
You can see JD Vance's eyeliner from here.

JD Vance took to the stage at the Paris AI Action Summit on Wednesday declaring that, "the United States of America is the leader in AI and our administration plans to keep it that way."

"The US possesses all components across the full AI stack, including advanced semiconductor design, frontier algorithms, and, of course, transformational applications,” Vance said. “Now the computing power this stack requires is integral to advancing AI technology, and to safeguard America’s advantage, the Trump administration will ensure the most powerful AI systems are built in the U.S. with American-designed and manufactured chips.”

Windows 10 KB5051974 update adds a new app without asking
A Dell laptop with Windows 10 sitting on a desk.

Microsoft has released the KB5051974 cumulative update for versions 22H2 and 21H2, adding security fixes and patching a memory leak. However, as Bleeping Computer reports, the update also includes a surprise: the new Outlook for Windows app.

The update is mandatory because it includes the January 2025 Patch Tuesday security updates. Once you install it, you will notice the new app icon near the classic one in the Start Menu's apps section. Since the new app can operate concurrently, you don't have to worry about interfering with the old one.

Nvidia may release the RTX 5070 in March to counter AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs
The RTX 5070 in a graphic.

Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5070 may now be launching in early March, according to industry analyst MEGAsizeGPU (@Zed__Wang on X). Initially expected to debut in February, the source suggests that the mid-range Blackwell GPU has been pushed back—potentially as a strategic move to counter AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 9070.

Unveiled at CES 2025, the RTX 5070 is currently the most affordable GPU from the RTX 50-series lineup, at least till the RTX 5060 series goes official. It is powered by the GB205 GPU, featuring 48 Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs), 6,144 CUDA cores, and is equipped with 12GB of GDDR7 memory. The GPU utilizes a 192-bit memory interface, delivering a bandwidth of 672GB/s.
Nvidia has set the MSRP at $549, which is $50 less than its predecessor, the RTX 4070. While that may sound lucrative, it is important to consider that board partners will charge a premium over the MSRP and we cannot rule out scalpers and inflated retailer prices out of the picture.
