Nvidia says RTX Studio laptops are 7 times faster than MacBook Pro

A new line of Studio laptops have been announced at Nvidia’s CES 2022 press conference. According to Jeff Fisher, Nvidia Senior Vice President of GeForce, they are seven times faster than Apple’s latest MacBook Pro in specific 3D design workflows.

That’s quite a hefty claim, considering how powerful Apple’s new M1 Max MacBook Pros are. However, based on what was revealed, these new laptops will certainly pack a powerful punch and give Apple a run for its money.

The new Studio laptops will come with either the RTX 3080 Ti or 3070 Ti. The 3080 variants will have 16GB of GDDR6 memory, which is some of the fastest memory launched with a laptop. According to Nvidia, it even outperforms the desktop Titan RTX.

Nvidia spoke at length about the importance of 3D designers and modelers in the future, and how its Studio laptops specifically address that type of creative professional.

In the graph above, Nvidia compares an RTX 3080 Ti laptop against the M1 Max MacBook Pro, as well an RTX 3060 laptop. Popular 3D modeling applications such as Blender Cycles and Autodesk Arnold show just how large of a leap ahead Nvidia is referring to.

Of course, unlike Apple and Microsoft’s pro-oriented laptops, Nvidia’s Studio laptops are not manufactured by the company. Asus, MSI, and Razer are all launching Nvidia laptops in the Studio range starting in February. That means official performance will vary between manufacturers and other components used in the build. Nvidia didn’t specify what specific laptop it was testing, nor how thick or heavy it was.

While these devices will certainly do well for gaming, they are more aimed at creative professionals. This announcement comes alongside the announcement of Nvidia Omniverse becoming widely available. Omniverse is the company’s free design program for augmented reality.

For general PC enthusiasts, Nvidia also announced an entry-level RTX 3050 GPU for desktops. It offers all the benefits of the top-tier cards (real-time ray tracing, A.I., and video acceleration), but starts at just $279. It should generate some hype given the ongoing component shortage of the past few years, and it is set to release worldwide on January 27.

Nvidia is starting the year strong with these announcements, and with the Studio laptops only weeks away, it will be interesting to see if the company’s comparisons to M1 live up to the hype. We called the Apple 2021 MacBook Pros the best MacBooks in years in our review and praised the video playback and performance in GPU-intensive applications.

Why I went with the MacBook Pro over the Mac Studio
Apple MacBook Pro 16 front angled view showing display and keyboard.

A few weeks ago, I decided to migrate to all-Apple computing. It's been a fascinating journey and certainly not a straight line, with several unanticipated twists. Perhaps the biggest is an about-face when it comes to my main PC.

I had fully intended to replace my workhorse Windows desktop with Apple's most powerful, yet accessible desktop, the Mac Studio. That seemed entirely logical: a desktop PC should replace a desktop PC. As it turns out, however, Apple's MacBook Pro 16 better fits my needs. The reason why involves a lot of personal decision-making that hopefully you'll be able to relate to as you map out your own computing needs.
The M3 Max made me wonder

The M3 Max makes the MacBook Pro look like a nearly unbeatable laptop

Apple announced an update to its MacBook Pros at today's Scary Fast event that brings the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max under the hood. That might sound like a ho-hum generational chip refresh, especially coming just 10 months after the M2 Pro/Max models came out. But trust me -- these new MacBook Pros have become an unstoppable force, especially the new full-tilt model with the M3 Max.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro (which replaces the 13-inch MacBook Pro) will now have the option for the M3, M3 Pro, or M3 Max, while the 16-inch model gets the M3 Pro and an even more powerful M3 Max configuration. Across the board, these new M3 chips are built on the new 3nm technology, the same that's used in the new iPhone 15 models, only scaled up for the Mac. It's all about efficiency, with Apple claiming that the M3 chips provides the same performance at 30% less power.

How Nvidia and AMD could make Windows laptops feel like MacBooks
An ARM processor.

In an unexpected twist, Nvidia may soon make more than just some of the best graphics cards. Rumor has it that it's working on ARM-based processors for client PCs. It's not alone in this historic venture, either, because AMD is also said to be readying ARM CPUs.

According to a report from Reuters, both AMD and Nvidia are getting ready to launch ARM-based systems on a chip (SoCs) as early as 2025. The target market will be client PCs that run Windows, which has had a slow and troubled embrace of ARM architecture historically. After how successful such chips have been in Apple's own M1 and M2 silicon, though, it seems obvious that the transition to ARM will need to speed up in order for ARM-powered Windows laptops to truly compete.
