OS X Lion arrives after early Apple Store shutdown

osx-lionApple fans, today’s the day for OS X Lion.

After earlier reports hit the wire suggested the new operating system would be released mid-week, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer made it official during a quarterly earnings call yesterday, saying the company is “very excited to be launching Mac OS X Lion tomorrow.”

Making the much-anticipated release seem even more imminent, however, was the status of the Apple Store earlier this morning. Visitors to the site were greeted with the familiar “We’ll Be Back Soon” message that typically precedes major releases, along with a notice that the company is busy updating the store and will be back online shortly.

Now that the Apple Store is back online and Lion is indeed being offered, users are privy to the hundreds of new features of the operating system, which is available as a download from the online store before its release in boxed form. Among the new features are the ability to perform multi-touch gestures on laptop and iMac trackpads, increased security measures, various productivity-oriented upgrades, as well as a long list of other ingredients that have Apple fans salivating.

Lion will replace the popular Snow Leopard OS, and sell for $29.99.

Today’s release ends weeks of intense speculation regarding Lion’s arrival, with rumors catching fire earlier this week as July — the previously announced month of release — neared its end. Adding fuel to the fire was a widely circulated message from the company to developers two weeks ago, requesting that they submit their apps for consideration as soon as possible.

Today’s update to the Apple Store also appears to include some of the rumored aspects of a refresh for the MacBook Air, and some tweaks to the Mac Mini.

Asus Zenbook A14 vs Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4): close, but no cigar
Asus Zenbook A14 front angled view showing display and keyboard.

I recently gave the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4) a rare perfect 5-star rating and called it the best 13-inch laptop you can buy today. And I stand by that review, because the MacBook Air 13 really is as close to perfect as you'll find in a small laptop.

But the Asus Zenbook A14 also impressed me, with its really light weight that avoids feeling flimsy, and its combination of a beautiful OLED display and excellent battery life. Is it good enough to dethrone the MacBook Air 13?

I can recommend the M4 MacBook Air for its battery life alone
Rear view of lid on M4 MacBook Air.

Over the course of the past few months, I’ve tried a handful of Windows on Arm machines. The biggest takeaway is that if you buy a slim and light Windows laptop in 2025, you don’t need to hunt for a seat near a wall outlet. The battery life figures I’ve got from Qualcomm Snapdragon X-powered laptops have been pretty amazing.

For the first time, I feel Windows laptops have reached a point where they can reach the high benchmark set by the MacBook Air. My most recent tryst was with the Asus Zenbook A14, and the Dell XPS 13 before that. I loved the thin and lightweight form factors, and the progress Windows on Arm has made with the app compatibility situation.
