Samsung Spins Out Compact External Drives

Samsung Spins Out Compact External Drives

Adding to its extensive line of hard disks, Samsung launched a new line on Wednesday with a focus on compact size and style. The 2.5-inch S2 Portable and 1.8-inch S1 Mini will offer USB connectivity, a professional look, and sizes of up to 500GB and 160GB, respectively.

Samsung has wrapped the drives in a high-gloss plastic casing that will come in piano black, snow white, wine red, and chocolate brown, all of which also come with a leather back cover. To keep size down, the USB controller has been integrated into the actual drives, giving the S1 Mini the footprint as small as a credit card.

Samsung will introduce the S2 Portable in capacities of 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB. The smaller S1 will be available in 80GB, 120GB, and 160GB. The drives will be available sometime in the fourth quarter, but prices have not yet been announced.

I tried out the incredible Samsung Odyssey Ark monitor, and it has one big problem
Samsung Odyssey Ark vertically

Samsung Odyssey Ark is finally coming -- in fact, you can reserve a unit now for when the monitor goes on sale in early September. It floored me when I saw the display at CES, and it was equally as impressive seeing it a second time. But then I tried to use it with Windows.

Ark is a 55-inch rotating mini LED monitor that stands out with its ability to stack several windows either horizontally or vertically, and it's one of the most anticipated monitors of 2022. The practicality of doing that with a Windows or Mac computer is up for question, though, especially considering Samsung is asking for more money for the Ark than it ever has for a gaming monitor.

Forget CPUs. Say goodbye to ARM systems on a chip (SOCs). Samsung just dropped its second-generation smart SSD, and this sounds like a game changer.

The SmartSSD processes data right there on the hard drive. Programs saved to your PC don't need to lose speed transferring to your CPU in order to launch. Games can render graphics directly from the drive, freeing up GPU cores. It's like a party on your SSD and everyone is invited.
