Apple Watch Series 3, Apple Watch Series 5 have never been cheaper

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

There has never been a better time to buy an Apple Watch — be it an Apple Watch Series 3 or Apple Watch Series 5. Why? Because both are down to their lowest-ever prices for Memorial Day. The former is on sale from $179 at Amazon and Best Buy, and the latter from $299. We aren’t kidding.

For most it’s the Apple Watch Series 5 that will be the attracting force, and rightfully so. It’s the latest smartwatch in Apple’s arsenal and it’s on sale for $100 under sticker, the cheapest we’ve seen it by $50 (the previous lowest-recorded price was $350). $299 for a current Apple Watch is unprecedented.

Of course, if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, the Apple Watch Series 3 is a fantastic alternative. It’s armed with nearly the same skillset as the Apple Watch Series 5. Both monitor heart health, record steps, and have all the same core functions of a smartwatch — notification mirroring and so on.

The main differences? The Apple Watch Series 5 has a larger screen that can be set to stay on at all times, an electrical heart sensor that can take ECGs, and automatic fall detection. It also has a compass built in, comes with a newer, faster processor, and lasts for a fair bit longer on a single charge.

The fact of the matter is you can’t go wrong with either of these smartwatches. They’re both absolute bargains at they’re respective price points. Although if you’re torn between the two, we’d have to side with the Apple Watch Series 5. It’s the latest model and, frankly, $100 off is bonkers.

Not a fan of the Apple Watch? There are plenty of other Memorial Day sales happening right now that see everything from the Garmin Fenix 6S Pro to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in the bargain bin. Our recommendation? REI has the Garmin Forerunner 45S for $150, down $50 from the usual $200.

Is the Apple Watch Series 9 waterproof?
Exercise data showing on the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Apple Watch Series 9, released in September 2023, is the latest addition to Apple's line of smartwatches. Alongside the Apple Watch Ultra 2, the Series 9 boasts many impressive features and upgrades.

The Apple Watch Series 9 resembles its predecessor, the Apple Watch Series 8, in terms of design. However, it does come with a few notable improvements. The watch offers more peak brightness, which makes it easier to view in bright sunlight, and the new chip is faster and more efficient than the previous model. It can also process some Siri requests entirely on-device, allowing you to perform certain commands even when not connected to your iPhone.

The Google Pixel Watch 3 could steal this Apple Watch feature

Google is readying an upgraded wireless connectivity suite for its upcoming smartwatch that improves location tracking accuracy and helps with remote device unlock. The folks over at 9to5Google took a peek at the code of the latest Play Services app update and found mention of ultra-wideband (UWB) for device unlock.

The Google Pixel Watch 2 already offers a device unlock feature that keeps your smartphone unlocked as long as it is close to your smartwatch. Built atop Bluetooth-based proximity sensing, this system creates a “trusted device” pair, which essentially tells your phone that you are nearby (courtesy of the watch on your wrist) and keeps it in an unlocked state.

5 features I want in the Apple Watch Ultra 3
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 laying on the ground, showing the Modular Ultra watch face.

When Apple debuted the Apple Watch Ultra in 2022, it was one of the company’s best new products that year. After years of rumors and speculation, it finally arrived and exceeded expectations with the best battery life for an Apple Watch, incredibly useful new features like the Action button, a super-bright and large display, and more.

A year later, Apple launched the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Though still a great smartwatch, it felt a bit more like an iterative upgrade than something big. It had a new S9 processor that allowed for the Double Tap gesture and localized Siri requests, and an even brighter display. But otherwise, it looked identical to the original Apple Watch Ultra.
