Activision announces Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark to coincide with the new movie

A new Transformers game is on the way from Activision and Hasbro, timed to coincide with the release of Michael Bay’s fourth film in the series, Transformers: Age of Extinction. The game, titled Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, will be released for Nintendo 3DS, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One this June.

According to Activision, Rise of the Dark Spark will serve as a follow-up to both the upcoming film as well as the games Transformers: War for Cybertron and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Over 40 playable characters will be featured in this third-person action-adventure game, from both the film and the game universes. Players get to choose between playing as Autobots and Decepticons in their fight to secure the titular Dark Spark as it possibly… well, rises.

There will also be a multiplayer component by way of the returning Escalation mode, which is built around wave-based survival gameplay. Activision also promised a new leveling system that “transforms single-player and multiplayer into one unified, persistent character development path. Experience earned in any part of the game unlocks potent awards and tactical loadout choices – including new characters, stronger weapons, special abilities and consumable bonuses – for use throughout the entire game.”

The game is coming to us from developer Edge of Reality (the developer of the recent Loadout), which marks a shift in Activision’s previous plans when it comes to the Transformers license. The last Transformers game, High Moon Studios’ well-received Transformers: Fall of Cybertron was released on August 21, 2012. The Activision-owned development studio also created War for Cybertron, and the movie tie-in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Following the trio of Transformers titles, High Moon Studios went on to release Deadpool which did not fare as well (though it is very funny). Activision let go more than 40 High Moon employees after that.

Edge of Reality is a privately owned studio that is perhaps best know for its ports of Mass Effect 3 for the PS3 and The Sims 3 for PS3 and Xbox 360. An exact date wasn’t given for the game’s release, but the film Transformers: Age of Extinction hits theaters on June 27. Rise of the Dark Spark should arrive right around then.

I swapped my camera for a game controller, and became a better photographer
DT OuttaFocus: I swapped my camera for a game controller, and became a better photographer

I don’t trust my photographic instincts, and my life doesn’t always afford me the time to go out and hone them and experiment with my camera. If you have a similar problem, I may have found a way around all this. It requires nothing more than sitting in your living room holding a video game controller. It’s a game called Lushfoil Photography Sim, and it’s like a set of training wheels for your camera.

How does it help?

Paranormal puzzle game Ghost Town is a step forward for VR
A man shines a light in a dark room in Ghost Town

My favorite thing about following the video game industry closely as part of my job is seeing how much it evolves over time. It’s a joy to see something like mobile games grow from playing Snake on my phone to console-quality games. And it’s similarly rewarding to follow a studio from its debut game to its bigger, more ambitious projects decades later. Ghost Town lets me see both of those evolutions play out at once.

The new VR puzzle game is the latest project by Fireproof Games. If you’ve played a lot of mobile games over the years, you may recognize that name as the developer behind The Room, an excellent series of moody escape room games. After four hits on mobile, Fireproof would expand its skillset with 2020’s The Room VR: A Dark Matter, a must-have VR game that showed how much more the studio could do. Five years later, Fireproof has raised the bar for both itself and VR gaming at large again with Ghost Town.

Nintendo Switch 2 Questions with Giovanni Colantonio
A couple of weeks ago, we posted our first hands-on impressions of the Nintendo Switch 2. I got to attend the first-ever hands-on event for the console, played about 11 games, and now I’m here to answer your biggest questions.

Question from @kennethcheung4938: We haven’t seen much of the new OS yet—is it similar to the original Switch OS, or is it a full overhaul? If it’s the latter, will we still be able to play games from outside our native region? For example, if I have a U.S. Switch, can I buy physical game cartridges in Japan and still play them in English?
