Crytek confirms Crysis 3

crytek confirms crysis 3With more than 3 million copies of Crysis 2 sold around the world, it should come as no surprise to learn that a sequel is on the way. Even if the game had sold half that number, it is still one of the most appealing shooter franchises in the industry and another offering in the series was inevitable.

crytek confirms crysis 3The announcement is a little bit anti-climactic following the leak last week of an image that featured the title character with a boss new compound bow, and the title “Crysis 3.” It wasn’t exactly Earth-shattering news, but it was the first quasi-official confirmation of any kind that a sequel was in development. There were rumors, and it makes sense, but the leak was the first real evidence.

Today EA and BioWare have made it official and confirmed that Crysis 3 is in development.

Set in 2047, Crysis 3 will once again feature the character of Prophet and his fancy threads. In the time between the new game and Crysis 2, the nefarious and metaphorical mustache-twirling Cell Corporaiton has moved in on New York and encompassed it with a nanodome, creating seven unique environments that make up the “New York City Liberty Dome.” These environments range from a rain forest to swamplands to rivers.

The Cell Corporation claims that the nanodome is there to protect the citizens from the remains of the Ceph forces, but Prophet is having none of it. He heads into the dome in order to explode his way to the truth, and will once again face off with the Cell Corporation as well as Ceph forces.

EA and Crytek have also released a list of pre-order bonus as well:

  • Stalker Pack — Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey from the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.
  • Overkill Pack — Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Overkill Pack features early multiplayer access to the Typhoon assault weapon and skin. Spewing 500 rounds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.
  • Predator Pack — Includes the base game, all the Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Predator Pack delivers early multiplayer access to the Feline submachine gun and exclusive camo. With an extremely fast rate of fire and a 60 round magazine the Feline is highly effective and deadly, at short range.

Crysis3 is scheduled for Spring 2013 fvor PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
