Madden NFL 21 reveals unlikely SpongeBob SquarePants collaboration

Nickelodeon has teamed up with EA to create a collection of SpongeBob SquarePants-themed content for Madden NFL 21. The surprising collaboration features a SpongeBob arena for the game’s Yard mode and a collection of cosmetics based on the cartoon.

The new update, which is available to download right now, adds a new Reef-Top location to The Yard. The field features several signature touches from the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, including the iconic pineapple house and a giant inflatable SpongeBob hovering above the field.

The update comes with new modes that can be played at the location. In the new Goo Lagoon Bowl, players have to navigate a field of goo that slows them down. The Sandy’s Rocket Arm Rally allows players to launch passes of over 80 yards. The Flying Dutchman’s Ghostly Grab awards players points for making big catches.

In addition to the new modes, the update brings new SpongeBob-inspired gear to the game, which players can earn by completing challenges in the Reef-Top locale. A trailer shows players sporting bright yellow uniforms and gear emblazoned with characters including Patrick.

The update may seem entirely left-field, but this isn’t the first collaboration between Nickelodeon and the NFL brand this year. The channel will host ththis weekend’s NFL wild card playoff game between the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints. Nickelodeon will air a pregame special hosted by Denver Broncos star LB Von Miller.

The update is currently live in Madden NFL 21. EA says it will drop more content in the next few weeks, including gear capsules inspired by the show’s wide cast of characters. Hopefully, SpongeBob can avoid getting the Madden Curse.

Earlier this week, the Washington Redskins said that following a review that started July 3, it decided that the Redskins name and logo will be retired, after years of criticism that they perpetuate racist stereotypes against Native Americans. The team's new name and logo have not yet been revealed.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage proves that narrative adventures can still innovate
Kat in Lost Records Bloom and Rage

At this point, the gameplay formula for narrative adventure games is set in stone. Third-person exploration in confined spaces interspersed between conversations where players have to make impactful, story-shaping choices is the genre norm. Occasionally, a puzzle is thrown in for good measure, but these gameplay segments are often the weakest parts of narrative adventure titles like Life is Strange: Double Exposure. Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, on the other hand, does not have that problem.

In 2014, Don't Nod was the first studio outside of Telltale to show that the narrative adventure genre had legs with the original Life is Strange. Now, many of the developers who worked on the first two Life is Strange games are back with a new game looking to push the genre forward yet again. While many narrative adventure games can feel the same nowadays, the first episode of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, which is out now, reminded me that there's still plenty of room for innovation in the space.
