Everything announced at Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2023

The first big gaming showcase of June is here, and it gave us a look at what’s next for games made for the Meta Quest family of VR headsets. It was an important showcase too, as the Meta Quest Pro came out last year to very muted results, the idea of the metaverse is fading in its relevancy, and the Meta Quest 3 headset is going to release this fall. During this showcase, Meta tried t reaffirm why people should care about owning one of its VR headsets.

It did so mainly by revealing VR follow-ups to popular IP. Games like Samba de Amigo, The 7th Guest, and Bulletstorm are being remade in VR. Meanwhile, well-known IP like Stranger Things, Attack on Titan, and Assassin’s Creed are also making the jump to virtual reality as well, and as sequel to Asgard’s Wrath is in the works. A lot was revealed during the preshow and actual showcase, so rounded up everything that was revealed for you right here.

Sega’s Samba de Amigo revival comes out for Switch in August, but it’s also getting a VR version of Meta Quest headsets. Samba de Amigo: Party Central’s rhythm game experience seems to adapt surprisingly well to virtual reality, with players using the Meta Quest controllers to shake their maracas and strike poses. Samba de Amigo releases for Meta Quest 2 sometime this Fall and is available for pre-order on the Meta Quest Store now.

7th Guest VR | Announcement Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

The 7th Guest was an iconic early PC game that helped spearhead the popularity of CD-ROMs and left a clear mark on the adventure game genre. Now, Vertigo Games is remaking The 7th Guest in VR, with exploring the house as a virtual space replacing the interactive movie feel of the original. The 7th Guest will be released for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro later this year.

Stranger Things VR game lets you take control of Vecna

Stranger Things VR | Gameplay Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

We also got our first extended look at Stranger Things VR during the show. We see what it’s like to take the role of Vecna, the villain of the Netflix show’s final two seasons, as he explores the Upside Down and tries to make his way into and corrupt Hawkins. It should give us a better idea of how exactly Vecna orchestrated the events of Stranger Things’ first three seasons and reveal more of his backstory at both the Hawkins Lab and when he was banished to Upside Down by Eleven. Stranger Things VR is slated to release this fall for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro and should tide fans over until Season 5, which has been delayed due to the writer’s strike.

Bulletstorm VR was announced

Bulletstorm | Announcement Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

One of the most surprising announcements from the show was that Bulletstorm is coming back as a VR game. People Can Fly, the developers of the original frantic 2011 shooter, are working with Green Hill VR developer Incuvo to adapt the PC and console FPS to VR. Like Resident Evil 4 before it, this is a classic, albeit a cult classic, that players will be able to experience from a new perspective in VR. It will be released for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro later this year.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 launches this winter

Asgard’s Wrath 2 | Official Gameplay Reveal Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

As the final reveal of the show, Sanzaru Games Asgard’s Wrath 2, a sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed VR games. An extended gameplay look following its reveal trailer went into even more detail, showing the new mount system, Godscale puzzles, some of the heroes that players can take control of, weapon customization, an infinitely replayable dungeon crawling mode, and more. Those who pre-order will get a copy of the original Asgard’s Wrath, a sandsea home environment, an Asgard’s Wrath 2-themed character and title in Population One, and some in-game items when the sequel finally releases. 2023 gaming report card: how did PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo score?

It's been a long year filled with massive games, but we've finally reached the end of 2023. There's no question that this year will be remembered as one of the all-time best for new releases -- and one of the worst for game creators -- but it's been a whirlwind 12 months for the "big three" console makers. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo all had pivotal years, though in entirely different ways. While the Nintendo Switch took a victory lap, the PS5 entered an experimental era. The Xbox Series X, on the other hand, finally delivered the suite of exclusives fans had been waiting for ... with mixed results.

To reflect on such an eventful year, we've decided to take on the role of teacher and hand each company a final grade for 2023. We took several factors into account here. Exclusive games are a major component of the final grade, naturally, but we also looked at how well each system maintained its wider ecosystem. That includes supporting services like PS Plus and Game Pass and evaluating how new hardware changed how we play.

The biggest gaming news of 2023: Insomniac leak, GTA 6 reveal, and more

2023 was a roller coaster for the video games industry. On the software side, it was a historic year for new releases. We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. But from the business side, 2023 was a lot more tumultuous. While some notable studio acquisitions and game announcements happened, thousands of developers were laid off, entire studios were shut down or hacked, and the provider of one of the most popular game engines landed in hot water after trying to roll out a controversial change.

The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.

We predicted gaming’s 2023 future last December. Here’s what we got right

At the end of every year, there's one article I always look forward to writing. I try to put the "Trends" in Digital Trends" by predicting where gaming is headed in the coming year. It's a fun thought experiment that puts my expertise to the test as I try to pull together narratives and pin down what the industry is building to. Sometimes I'm spot-on. Other times, I'm hilariously off.

As I began to think about this year's edition, I decided to look back to what I'd written almost exactly one year ago on New Year's Day 2023.  Some of my predictions were right on the money, but others were more sobering. I expected some major growth moments and devastating layoffs occurred instead. Some of those were hard to see coming -- especially in the bizarre case of the Embracer Group. Still, my reflection on what I was expecting reminded me of what a tough industry games can be even when its pumping out historic titles. This year, I'm peeling back the curtain to talk about what I got right and wrong about a tumultuous 2023.
