Tecmo Koei and Nintendo are developing a Wii U entry in the Fatal Frame series of survival horror games, according to Famitsu (via Gematsu). Neither the title nor the launch date/window have been released, nor is there any word yet on plans to release it in the United States.
Other than 3DS spin-off Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir in 2012, there has not been an entry into the series since 2008’s Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse for Wii, and none of the console offerings have been localized for the U.S. since Fatal Frame III: The Tormented appeared on PlayStation 2 in 2005.
The series, first released in 2001 for PS2 (and subsequently, Xbox), has you exploring a variety of haunted ruins, equipped with a magic camera that kills spirits when you take pictures of them. As the survival horror genre has drifted further and further from the horror element over the last decade and more in the direction of mindless shock and gore, Fatal Frame games have held down the fort by remaining genuinely strange and creepy.
Particularly avid fans will be excited to learn that the game’s release will be accompanied by a multimedia blitz of new Fatal Frame content, including a live-action film, a novel, and a comic.
