New trailer heralds the arrival of Bloodborne on February 6, 2015

A new trailer for Bloodborne debuted at the Tokyo Game Show, and it confirmed release date of February 6 for the PlayStation 4 exclusive gothic horror action RPG from Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. The trailer features some unseen examples of the game’s intricate environments and brutal combat against grotesque creatures, as well as more hints at the game’s multiplayer modes.

A post on the PlayStation Blog has also revealed the Collector’s Edition, available now for pre-order. The limited edition includes a Steelbook game case, art book, digital soundtrack, and of course the game itself. Pre-ordering the game will net you a special DLC addition of an exclusive, alternate skin for your Messengers–creepy skeletal figures that pop out of the ground bearing giant scrolls that are connected to the game’s asynchronous multiplayer features.

Bloodborne expands upon Miyazaki’s groundbreaking work in action RPGs from Dark Souls, turning up the heat for combat that is more aggressive than the other franchise’ measured survival focus, though no less punishing. It comes exclusively to PlayStation 4 on Feburary 6, 2015. You can check out some extended gameplay footage here.

It could be said that FromSoftware's ever-expanding collection of punishing but rewarding role-playing games – lovingly referred to as the Soulsborne series – has been among the most influential of all time. In fact, the cultural impact of Soulsborne games has been so powerful that it's led to an entirely new subgenre of role-playing games known as "Soulslikes." But while many studios have tried to mimic the famed Japanese developer's game design philosophy to varying results, few have come close to offering the same breathtaking experiences.

Granted, as the grandfather of Soulslikes, FromSoftware simply knows its way around the genre like no other. And by maintaining extremely similar gameplay mechanics, controls, and UI elements across each game, the studio ensures that its games, though not directly connected, remain familiar to fans who have played previous entries in the series. The most consistent thing of all, though, is the consistently challenging combat and exploration, which has defined the series since the beginning and is often the most-cited reason players flock to the games.

Gearbox Studios on using performance capture in New Tales from the Borderlands

The AAA games industry has a clear interest in adopting more cinematic techniques. The most lauded titles of recent years -- God of War (2018) and Red Dead Redemption 2 are among them -- all seem like interactive movies in some respect. Many people point to aesthetics, like the continuous shot that frames Kratos, as clear examples of “cinematic” approaches to game design. And they are right to do so.

But the truth is that modern AAA production itself sometimes bears an even stronger, and less discussed, resemblance to cinema. Such is the case of New Tales from the Borderlands. Digital Trends sat down with James Lopez, Gearbox Software's head of production, and Amelie Brouillette, Gearbox Quebec's associate producer, to dig deeper into the team's first attempt at performance capture -- a modern technique that adds filmic detail to the already immersive world of Borderlands.
