The PlayStation 4 has now sold more than 50 million units, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today. The milestone comes after what the company calls its “best ever Black Friday week” in history, bolstered by the introduction of the PlayStation 4 Pro and redesigned “slim” PlayStation 4 system, and is representative of consoles sold through to consumers, and not just those purchased by retailers.

PlayStation software has also continued to sell well, with 369.6 million copies of games sold — this number includes both digital downloads and retail sales — as of December 4. This puts the average number of games per PlayStation 4 owner at about seven.

“With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware, including the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro, and PlayStation VR,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House in a press release.

PlayStation VR is apparently not selling as well as Sony had expected, however. Though the research group SuperData previously expected the headset to move 2.6 million units by the end of the year, it has managed sales of only about 750,000: a shortfall of more than 71 percent.

The research group blamed some of this disparity on a lack of sufficient marketing, but also on supply insufficiency. The headset was sold out from virtually ever retailer just a short time after being made available for pre-order.

Back in January, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen revealed that the PlayStation 4 had, at that point, sold 36 million units. This would put its 2016 figure at around 14 million. The Xbox One was estimated to have sold 19 million units as of January, but then outsold the PlayStation 4 in the United States for several months in a row. In November, however, the PlayStation 4 was able to dethrone Microsoft’s machine, though Microsoft stated that last month was still the “best November ever” for Xbox One.

The PlayStation 4 has certainly continued to deliver an impressive lineup of exclusive games. In addition to 2016 favorites like Uncharted 4 and Ratchet & Clank, the highly anticipated action-RPG Horizon: Zero Dawn arrives next February.

All cross-platform games (PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)

Cross-platform support is becoming more important in the world of video games. Multiplayer hits like Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite have pushed crossplay into the limelight, and now most AAA multiplayer games release with at least partial cross-platform support. Finding every cross-platform game is no easy feat, though, so we did the hard work to bring you a comprehensive list of games that support crossplay.

Unfortunately, there aren't any rules when it comes to crossplay, so each game handles the feature a little differently. To make matters more confusing, certain backward-compatible games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X still support crossplay on the most recent hardware, even if there isn't an official release for that hardware.

PlayStation Portal 2: 8 features we want in Sony’s next-gen handheld

After the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita, there wasn't much hope that Sony would create another handheld system. Both consoles failed to establish themselves as meaningful parts of PlayStation's ecosystems despite having passionate fan bases. That's what made the initial reveal of the PlayStation Portal so surprising, at least until we knew exactly what it was. As an accessory, the PlayStation Portal is a decent device for some situations. It makes remote play easy and combines all the cool features of the DualSense controller with a great display. However, it does leave a lot to be desired for those hoping for a bit more from a new PlayStation device. Should Sony decide to iterate on this novel idea, there are a few features we think it needs to have to be a true success.

We're not going to ask Sony to completely overhaul what it established with the PlayStation Portal.  For as much as we'd love for a fully dedicated handheld like a Vita 2, that's just too far beyond what we can hope for.

Xbox, PlayStation, and PC: Is Elden Ring cross-platform?

When it launched in 2022, Elden Ring was an immediate hit. The challenging game took everything great from previous FromSoftware titles and merged it with a sweeping open world to explore -- letting players venture in any direction just a few minutes after starting the game. That also made it incredibly daunting. Not only did you have to contend with nightmarish monsters and rage-inducing combat, but you had to figure out how to best reach your next destination without stumbling upon enemies that were twice your skill level.

Thankfully, Elden Ring makes use of a (cryptic) multiplayer system, allowing you to explore the Lands Between with a buddy by your side. You can also read and leave messages for other players, giving them tips and tricks to guide their journey. But is Elden Ring cross-platform, or are you stuck playing with folks on the same platform as you?
