‘Rocket League’ is the latest game to get full cross-platform play

Rocket League® - Rocket Pass 2 Trailer

Several months ago, Sony announced the PlayStation 4 cross-play beta program, which allowed Fortnite users on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Mac, PC, and mobile devices to all play together, and the program is getting a new game. Rocket League now supports cross-platform play, as well, so you can play with all of your friends, regardless of which systems you own.

To enable cross-play in Rocket League, you just need to go to the “options” page of the main menu, select “gameplay,” and ensure that “cross-platform play” is checked. With this function turned on, you will automatically be matched with players on all the other systems.

The feature will work across all online match modes, but cross-platform parties aren’t enabled right now. They will be coming in the game’s first update and in the meantime, you can play in private matches if you only want to be matched up against your friends.

“Today’s announcement is an important one for us here at Psyonix, because we know how much our community has wanted full cross-platform support for quite some time,” Psyonix said in the announcement.

Rocket League is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, but cross-platform play was previously limited. If you were on PC, you could play with anyone on the other platforms, but those on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch were unable to play with those on PlayStation 4.

Sony’s tune has changed over the last few months and it’s likely that we’ll see other games follow suit. Minecraft is the obvious next candidate and Microsoft is enthusiastic about wanting to bring cross-play to PlayStation 4, as it’s already available between Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PC, and more.

The PlayStation 4 has been able to drag its feet for so long on this issue because it is, by far, the best-selling console of the generation. More than 91 million systems have been sold since it launched in 2013, and more than 870 million games have been sold during the same period. That has created an enormous player-ecosystem, but there are certainly still times when two players want to enjoy a game together but are limited by their platforms.

PlayStation Plus is the perfect stocking stuffer for RPG fans this year

I thought I had my fill of gaming subscription services. PlayStation Plus's price increase turned me off and the offerings of Xbox Game Pass never fit my fancy. While both of these have their positives, I've never been one to just drop so much money every month for a bunch of games I don't really care about. That was until I jumped into my yearly Christmas-time RPG mood and discovered the bounty of classics that's built up on PS Plus.

You only have one week left to share PlayStation clips and screenshots to X

A notification some users received on PS4 and PS5 confirms that the platforms' integration with X -- the social media platform formally known as Twitter -- will go away next week. That means you'll no longer be able to quickly share screenshots or videos to X from the console.
"As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles," the notification (as screenshotted by Wario64) states. "This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay-related activities on X directly from PS5/PS5 (or link an X account to do so)."

Since the release of the PS4, people have been able to share screenshots and videos taken with the controller's Share button with social media services. Twitter historically was one of those platforms, but API changes following Elon Musk's buying of the platform and rebranding to X have interfered with its integration with many platforms. Now, it seems that Sony has decided that it's best just to rid PlayStation platforms of any X integration whatsoever. PlayStation has not publicly commented on why it's removing this feature yet, but we've contacted them for comment and will update this story when we get a response.
If there are any screenshots or videos on your PS4 or PS5 that you want to get onto X, you have until November 13 to do so. After that, Apple, Discord, Spotify, Twitch, and YouTube will be the only services one can link their PlayStation account to.

PlayStation Plus is getting a major price hike following Game Pass changes

Sony confirmed that 12-month subscriptions for PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium will all see price increases alongside the reveal of September's new Essential games on the PlayStation Blog.
Starting on September 6, 12 months of PS Plus Essential goes up in price from $60 to $80, PS Plus Extra's yearly price increases from $100 to $135, and an annual subscription to PS Plus Premium will rise from $120 to $160.

Sony says it needs to increase the price of all three versions of PlayStation Plus "to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service" and that buying a 12-month subscription is still cheaper than subscribing to any of the shorter-term plans over the same period of time. The price hikes comes just a couple of months after Microsoft raised the price of Xbox Game Pass.
When it comes to the games PS Plus Essential subscribers can expect this month, first up is Saints Row, a 2022 reboot of an open-world crime franchise that garnered mixed reviews upon its release. Next is Generation Zero, an open-world sci-fi shooter where players fight evil machines. Finally, those who have not already purchased a version of the MMO Black Desert on PS4 can redeem Black Desert - Traveler Edition, which comes with some additional items; if you have bought a version of Black Desert, you can just redeem the Traveler Item Pack.
