Star Trek VR experience showcased at CES 2017

Alcatel, a TCL Communication cell phone manufacturer, has partnered with CBS Interactive to deliver a Star Trek VR experience at CES 2017. The event will take viewers on a journey through the history of major ships from the iconic franchise.

The showcase is part of the lead-up to the debut of the upcoming CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery, which will take place approximately ten years prior to the events of the original Star Trek series. The 13-episode first season, created by Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), is set to appear in May 2017. The pilot is slated to run during a special CBS broadcast, while each subsequent episode will stream on CBS All Access on a weekly basis.

“The Star Trek legacy is among the most iconic in American pop culture. Partnering with CBS Interactive to bring these quintessential show experiences to life not only expands our brand presence here in North America, but also honors our commitment to delivering consumers rich, engaging content,” claims Steve Cistulli, President and General Manager of TCL Communication.

CBS All Access subscribers will also be able to stream every television episode of the Star Trek franchise on demand. CBS All Access subscriptions start at $6 per month, which gives users access to a large library of CBS shows, as well as the ability to stream live programs.

Alcatel is an official partner with CBS All Access for the upcoming TV series, and the VR experience is their first digital marketing presentation in conjunction with the show.

Trekkies interested in engaging in a more hands-on VR experience can look forward to the upcoming cooperative game Star Trek: Bridge Crew from Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment.

Rumored release window

A constant release window that all leaks have pointed to is sometime in Fall of 2024. That's right around the corner, probably in the September through November range, meaning we should be getting an official announcement on the console if that is indeed the plan. It appears that PS5 Pro dev kits are now in the hands of more developers, who have been asked that PS5 Pro-enhanced games be submitted for certification in August. These developments point toward a 2024 release.

If you instantly know what that means, there’s a good chance you’re nursing some mid-30s back pain right now. Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 (or Switch Pro) have been circulating for years. Whispers of the next-gen Nintendo console first started when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was initially teased in 2019, gained steam when the Switch OLED launched in 2021, and are increasing now that the standard Switch has been out for six years.

There's no doubt that the Nintendo Switch is a fantastic console -- it has a unique and impressive game library (with more upcoming games slated for this year), the number of features included with Nintendo Switch Online is constantly improving, and it's still our favorite portable console -- but it isn't without its flaws. There's enough room for improvement to warrant an entirely new console in the near future. Nintendo recently announced that we wouldn't see a Switch upgrade in the next fiscal year, meaning the absolute earliest we get a look at a new Nintendo console would be in late 2024.
