Acer Elbows into Smartphone Market

Acer Elbows into Smartphone Market

Not content with its lines of laptops, desktops, netbooks, servers, monitors, TVs, projectors, digital photo frames and even handhelds, Acer has announced plans to cut into the smartphone business. Confirming long-held rumors, the company sent out media invites on Wednesday to the debut of its first smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The move comes after Acer bought up Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer E-Ten early last year, which produces the Glofiish line of phones. Hints from Acer president Gianfranco Lanci indicate the phone will likely be based on Windows Mobile, but it’s unlikely to be a rebadged Glofiish, given the long delay between the company’s acquisition and the mystery phone’s launch.

The official announcement will come on the first day of MWC on Feb. 16, when Lanci delivers a presentation at 7 p.m.

Samsung ends support for a pivotal phone that redefined the smartphone segment
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Samsung has officially ended support for one of the most important phones in recent history. It’s time to say goodnight to the Samsung Galaxy S20 family as it leaves the official list of phones to be updated.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 was a pivotal device, not just for Samsung, but for the rest of the smartphone market too. It marked a change in strategy for Samsung, with a new naming structure that matched the year of launch. The phone prior to the Galaxy S20 was the Galaxy S10, but rather than introduce the Galaxy S11, Samsung jumped to a more meaningful numbering.

Samsung may bring Now Brief to more Galaxy smartphones
Now brief on the Samsung Galaxy S25.

Samsung’s popular new AI tool, Now Brief, might soon make its way beyond the Galaxy S25 to older models like the Galaxy S24. While Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed this yet, recent software clues suggest the company could roll out the handy AI assistant to a wider range of Galaxy devices.

X user MEMETCAN88 (via Android Authority) discovered that Now Brief was accessible on a Galaxy S24 phone by way of the activity launcher when using the One UI 7 beta. Further, additional users (via SamMobile) were able to access it with phones like the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S10, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

OnePlus might be about to launch its most powerful budget smartphone yet
The OnePlus 13 and OnePlus Watch 3.

It's been a day for phone leaks, with Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge appearing in an unexpected hands on video, while the rumoured Apple iPhone 17 Air's svelte profile was presented alongside the iPhone 17 Pro using a couple of dummy cases. Both those devices are in the premium segment though. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge for example, is reported to cost $1400 so it's certainly not what you would call mid-range.

The next leak we are about to tell you about, however, is surrounding a device that is very much expected to hit the mid-range sweet spot. In fact, it might even fall into budget. A Weibo post from Digital Chat Station, spotted by MySmartPrice, has revealed that the OnePlus 13T could launch in April and run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform.
