Future Google TV hardware streams video from Android devices

Reported by IDG Magazines this week, a company called Honeywld Technology is developing a Google TV set-top box that will allow users to stream movies and television shows from an Android tablet or smartphone. Basically identical to Apple’s Airplay technology, video and pictures can be sent from a mobile Android device and appear on the television screen through the Google TV hardware. Android smartphone and tablet owners will have to install a third-party application in order to get it to work though. The company hasn’t announced support for syncing music through the Google TV hardware, but it’s likely that form of media will be supported as well.

This particular Google TV set-top box will run Android 4.0 OS (Ice Cream Sandwich) and uses a Marvell dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor along with 1GB of RAM. The device comes with microSD and HDMI inputs as well as 4GB of internal flash memory. In addition, users can connect the box to a router through an Ethernet jack or simply use Wi-Fi on their home network.

Beyond streaming video from an Android device, the set-top box also provides access to Google services such as YouTube and Picasa in addition to custom applications like a Web browser and a media player. Representatives at Honeywld Technology are still searching for a distributor within North America, but the company expects to price the set-top box between $95 to $120.

While this set-top box could be considered part of the next wave of Google TV devices, Google is still reeling from the lack of popularity of the discontinued Logitech Revue as well as the expensive, $300 Sony NSZ-GT1 Blu-ray player with Google TV functionality. Google will likely need to partner with a new consumer electronics manufacturer within North America in order to push out an inexpensive set-top box utilizing the new ARM processors instead of Intel chips.

The Google TV app is taking over for Play Movies & TV across all Android devices. When Google TV was introduced in late 2020, its mission to replace Play Movies & TV seemed like a good idea as the preinstalled app wasn't doing a lot to take users' attention away from other streaming apps. Google TV's addition to the Android ecosystem has been pretty gradual up to this point, but now it's set to be an essential part of the Android experience.

Play Movies & TV will be officially retired as the face of Android's streaming content store in favor of Google TV starting in May. At that point, buying content on Play Movies & TV will no longer be supported in the Play Store, Google announced earlier this week. Google TV will take Play Movies & TV's place as the preinstalled streaming app included by default on every Android device at that point.

Google’s Digital Wellbeing widget hits Android devices soon

A Digital Wellbeing widget will soon arrive to Android devices to help users keep a track of screen time and how much time they spend on Google apps. While the exact release date is currently unknown, it is expected that this widget will eventually be released to all Android devices. Notably, this is a feature that's already available for iPhone users since iOS 12, so Google is very late to the party by comparison.
As per 9to5Google, Digital Wellbeing will soon get this widget. A teardown of the APK file that Google uploaded to the Play Store revealed that the version 1.0.416751293.beta supported the Digital Wellbeing widget.

Google's more recent widget additions have been appreciated for their usefulness. The Google Photos widget enabled users to decorate their home screens with photos of their closest companions and favorite shots. Meanwhile, YouTube Music also introduced a "recently played" widget for Android 12 users that was available in three size options depending on the home screen layout. The widget provides quick access to played videos, playlists, albums, and more.The screen time checking feature is especially useful to those who suffer from bedtime procrastination and internet addiction. Apps like Instagram have a feature for checking the average amount of time spent on the app in the past week, with an option for setting daily reminders that appear once users reach their time limit, so the fact that Google hasn't had one up till now has been a pretty big omission.
