Wikipedia finally made a revised version of its iOS app, which aims to give users better recommendations for content that they’re interested in and match users with articles that pertain to their interests.

The new app has also been optimized to take advantage of Apple’s latest operating system iOS 9, offering support for 3D Touch and for Spotlight Search.

The refreshed app is Wikipedia’s latest attempt to take advantage of the mobile revolution. Previously, the company experimented with offline access and ways to edit articles on mobile. It also tried to make its website a lot more social, releasing “shareable fact cards,” which are still supported but are not as prominent.

Personalization has clearly been a big focus for Wikipedia in the development of this app. The app now offers users an “Explore” feed, which offers a number of the most popular articles, as well as a featured article and picture of the day. It will also pull in a few random articles, and articles that are selected based on things you’ve read in the past. Obviously, the feed will get better the more you use the app.

As mentioned, the app also now supports the latest Apple technology, meaning that it includes features accessed through 3D Touch. From the home screen, the user can use 3D Touch to access quick features like open search, see nearby articles, read a random article, or continue reading the last article that you read.

Another cool iOS-specific feature is Handoff. iOS allows users to seamlessly move between the iPhone, iPad, and Mac computer for things like calls, documents, and even some apps. In the case of Wikipedia, users can quickly jump between different devices to read articles.

Of course, only time will tell whether or not these changes have a big impact on the popularity, or lack of popularity, of the Wikipedia app. You can download the app for yourself here.

The next iPad may miss out on Apple’s biggest new feature
Two hands holding an iPad.

Apple Intelligence is, without a doubt, the biggest advancement Apple has made in years — so it's surprising that the next iPad might not have those features. The iPad 11 could ship with the older T8120 processor, and that likely means it will use the A16 chipset. The A16 chipset, powerful though it might be, doesn't offer the same level of support for Apple Intelligence features as newer models.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, along with the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, both use this chipset. According to MacRumors, the information is backed by a source that chose to remain anonymous; however, it also contradicts what Mark Gurman has previously said, and Gurman has the more proven track record.

Government demands answers from Apple over iOS 18 performance problems
A person holding the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Soon after Apple began the public rollout of iOS 18 — loaded with the Apple Intelligence stack — there were plenty of negative reports documenting sluggish performance, camera woes, UI status, and more.

Today, Apple has received a stern notice from India’s consumer watchdog over the performance issues encountered by iPhone users after installing the update. It is not quite the same as “Apple deliberately slowing down old iPhones,” because the iOS 18 woes also affect the latest iPhone models. The notice was issued by the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), a regulatory agency that oversees consumer grievances and violations of their rights, while also conducting investigations and issuing orders related to recalls.

Apple has released the iOS 18.3 Release Candidate (RC) to developers and its public beta community members. This indicates that the final update will likely be available to users with the best iPhones on Monday, January 27.

While this update doesn't introduce as many new features as iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2 did, some elements will still interest everyone. Here's what's coming.
The biggest new feature
Once you install iOS 18.3 on your iPhone, you will quickly notice one of its most significant updates: improved Notification Summaries. Initially launched with iOS 18, this feature aims to simplify reviewing incoming messages, news headlines, and other notifications using Apple's technology. However, the summaries have faced considerable criticism for their shortcomings.
