You can now watch Sony’s PlayStation Vue on your iPad, but there’s a catch

Sony’s PlayStation Vue television streaming service launched earlier this year, and while we found it had a lot of the same problems as cable television, it’s still a good solution if you want to use your PlayStation 3 or 4 as your sole media machine.

As of today, the service is available on another piece of hardware as well: the iPad. We’ve known this was coming since last year, and it’s certain to be a welcome addition for users of the service, but you might want to hold on before you download the app.

First, PlayStation Vue is still only available in three cities: New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. This applies to the iPad app as well, so if you live in Boise, for example, you’ll still be able to download the app, but you won’t be able to use it.

Second, you still need to sign up for the service on a PlayStation console before you can use it on your iPad. There might be some sort of workaround if you try hard enough, but this is still a service meant strictly for PlayStation owners, at least for the time being.

Sony has said previously that PlayStation Vue will come to more cities before the end of the year, but to date we haven’t heard anything about how many cities will be added. With E3 right around the corner, there’s a good chance that we’ll hear something soon.

The PlayStation Vue service itself starts at $50 per month and runs up to $70 per month for the most channel-laden package. The iPad app itself offers the same functionality as using the service on a console, and looks to work mostly the same as well.

If you’re not an owner of a PlayStation console and still want to stream live TV on your iPad, Sling TV offers fewer channels, but it’s also cheaper, starting at $20 per month.

YouTube TV just got even better on iPhones and iPads
Multiview on YouTube TV on an iPad.

If you use the most popular live-streaming service on an iPhone or iPad, things just got even better. YouTube TV — which boasts more than 8 million subscribers — just pushed multiview live on Apple's mobile devices, as previously promised.

It works basically the same way it does on a television. YouTube TV picks the programs available in multiview, and you get them all at once, with audio coming from one of the shows. Tap another, and the audio switches. And just as before, you can get multiview for sports, news, business, or weather. (Though we definitely don't recommend watching four news channels at once in an election year.) It's just in time for March Madness, which is great, though we hope you'll be able to pick your own games instead of just sticking with the multiple viewing options YouTube TV gives. This will be great come fall, though, when the new season of NFL Sunday Ticket takes hold.

PlayStation VR2 production reportedly paused by Sony
PlayStation VR2 headset on blue background.

Sony is reportedly pausing production of the PlayStation VR2 headsets because it has a backlog of unsold headsets.

This report comes from Bloomberg, which claims that PSVR2 sales have slowed every quarter since its February 2023 release, causing stocks of the device to build up. It says Sony has produced 2 million headsets but reportedly hasn't sold through them yet. As a result, it's apparently pausing the production on new units until it works through some of that backlog, according to Bloomberg's anonymous sources.

This is when Apple will finally release its new 2024 iPads
Apple iPad Pro 11 with Apple Magic Keyboard.

It's been a long time since Apple introduced a new iPad — October 2022, to be precise. In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reinforces his belief that Apple will finally reveal new iPads this spring, perhaps as early as the end of this month.

The Apple expert had previously noted that Apple would release new MacBook Airs and iPads at the beginning of the year. The first part of this promise came to fruition earlier this month when Apple revealed the M3 MacBook Air.
