Digital Trends MWC 2015 award nominees

When it comes to the tech you carry every day, such as phones, tablets, and smartwatches, no show looms larger than Mobile World Congress. Tech giants like Samsung, LG, and Sony descend on Barcelona every March to show off their hottest new toys. And if you’re in the market, you’ll find new products that make the gear introduced just months ago look ancient. This year was no exception. A spate of powerful new smartphones, super-thin tablets, and swanky smartwatches you’ll finally want to wear has made it one of the most exciting shows in recent memory.

With the first day of the show now over, Digital Trends’ crack team of editors have handpicked nominees for The Top Tech of MWC in five key categories: mobile, wearables, cool tech, apps, and accessories. FCC chairman tells MWC crowd that net neutrality blocks tech development

Speaking at the 2017 Mobile World World in Barcelona, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai said the growth of online business is the major factor in his decision to cut internet regulations, most notably net neutrality. Wider access to broadband internet and 5G wireless will continue what Pai described as "the democratization of the internet." But that process will slow down or even stop with heavy-handed regulation, in his view.

“5G could transform the wireless world,” Pai said. “We stand on the cusp of new advancements, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that we’ll achieve this potential. 5G will require a lot of infrastructure.”

Get closer: New smartphone camera tech from Oppo zooming to MWC

Oppo, the Chinese smartphone brand known for its camera phones, will be at Mobile World Congress at the end of this month, to show a new technology it’s calling “5x.” What’s 5x? Oppo’s not telling us, but from the way the firm describes it, we’re looking at a new technology, rather than just a new smartphone called the 5x. Probably best, as that’s just going to get confusing.

“Go 5x further,” says the Oppo invitation to see the tech at MWC, adding that it’s, “smartphone photography technology that will give users unprecedented ability to capture highly detailed images.” It has been in development for a year, and is now ready to be shown off to the public. Oppo has a strong photographic background, after it captured many headlines with its rotating camera modules and massive-megapixel selfie cams, and the company even takes the dubious honor of being the first to feature a pre-installed beautification mode on a smartphone.

Oppo promises big innovations in smartphone charging and camera tech for MWC

Oppo's got something major planned for this year's Mobile World Congress. The China-based smartphone maker released an ambiguous teaser image promising such technological showstoppers as a "groundbreaking power solution" and an "unprecedented smartphone camera innovation," among other as-yet undisclosed surprises.

The language may be hyperbolic, but Oppo's managed to deliver in the past. One example: its latest smartphones feature the company's proprietary VOOC Flash Charge, which is battery recharging tech that can deliver up to 66 percent more power than Qualcomm's comparable Quick Charge 2.0. The Oppo Find 7's battery takes just 30 minutes to reach 75 percent capacity, or 5 minutes to reach 2 hours.
