Thor: Love and Thunder, Obi-Wan doc to debut on Disney+ Day

Disney+ Day is making its triumphant return this year on September 8, and significant developments are starting to roll in. The big news comes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor: Love and Thunder will be available to stream on Disney+ Day.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the fourth Thor movie starring Chris Hemsworth pits the God of Thunder against Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who attempts to rid the world of the gods. Thor turns to Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) for help, with the latter developing the identity of Mighty Thor. A documentary, Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Thor: Love and Thunder, will be available to stream on September 8 as well.

Also arriving on Disney+ Day is the documentary, Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return. The behind-the-scenes documentary navigates the creation of Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor, which premiered on the service this past spring.

Other Disney+ Day premieres include Cars on the Road, Dancing with the Stars: The Pros’ Most Memorable Dances, Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory, Frozen and Frozen 2 Sing-Alongs, Growing Up, She-Hulk episode 4, Pinocchio, Remembering, Welcome to the Club (a new short from The Simpsons), and Tierra Incógnita.

This marks the second-ever Disney+ Day for the streaming service. The inaugural virtual event was held on November 12, 2021, which was the second anniversary of the streaming service. This year, Disney+ Day comes ahead of the highly anticipated D23 Expo on September 9–11, 2022. Both events come at the heels of the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company in 2023.

After Obi-Wan Kenobi: The case for a Darth Vader Star Wars series

Lucasfilm's Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series has wrapped its six-episode run and put the titular Jedi Master on one more collision course with the galactic horseman of the apocalypse that is Darth Vader. Part VI of the series fittingly ended the series on a dramatic, emotional, and cathartic close between the two before their final bout in A New Hope. But, how well-orchestrated their last fight in Obi-Wan Kenobi was could be telling for a Star Wars show focused on the Sith Lord's exploits.

How Disney was surprisingly willing to show Vader's unfiltered rage and the visceral momentum of the armor-clad villain in action could be a great opportunity for Lucasfilm to show a solo series that shows a side of the Force that hasn't been explored too deeply on-screen.

What’s next for Star Wars after Obi-Wan Kenobi?

With Disney+'s long-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series wrapping -- unless it's decided that it will no longer be "limited" -- it's no secret that Lucasfilm has plenty in store down the road. Especially so after the recent Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim revealed a batch of news for the likes of Andor and the upcoming Jude Law-led series.

But putting aside what's already set in motion behind the studio's closed doors, Lucasfilm should look to where else the franchise should expand thematically. Star Wars is one of the highest-grossing media IPs in the world, but throwing more kinds of stories into the mix alongside fan-favorite legacy characters will be the key to ensuring the franchise's longevity, renewed creativity, and ability to avoid fatigue.

Gaze upon the gods in Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder BTS video

It's no secret that the first two Thor movies were not blockbusters on the same level as Iron Man or the Avengers. Arguably, Thor: The Dark World is one of the worst films in the MCU. Fortunately, director Taika Waititi was able to turn the Odinson's fortunes around in Thor: Ragnarok, a largely comedic take on Chris Hemsworth's thunder god that struck box office gold. That's why Waititi was invited back to direct Thor: Love and Thunder. And in a new behind-the-scenes featurette, Hemsworth and the cast of the sequel couldn't be happier with the light touch that Waititi brings to the set.

Perhaps Waititi's most surprising accomplishment is that he was able to convince Natalie Portman to reprise her role as Jane Foster for the first time since The Dark World hit theaters in 2013. Thor's ex-girlfriend has a big role in the sequel as the Mighty Thor. If that's confusing for you, then it's even more so for the original Thor! But viewers of the first Thor movie witnessed Odin as he enchanted Thor's hammer with a spell which stated that anyone worthy enough to lift it would have the power of Thor. Jane proved that she was worthy, and thus she is the new Thor. What we don't know is who reforged the hammer and why.
