Forget the puppy ears. Snapchat and VSCO can make your snaps look like old film

What happens when you mix VSCO film-inspired presets with Snapchat’s augmented reality lenses? AR film effects like light leaks and flares. On Friday, November 8, VSCO announced the popular editing app’s first Snapchat lens, created in a partnership with the social media app.

Called analog, the Snapchat filter is designed, VSCO says, to recreate film’s “happy accidents,” mistakes, and imperfections from the smartphone camera. The Analog lens has two filer options. Film creates light leaks, flares, glare, and distortions inspired by film cameras. Prism mimics the effect created when holding a prism up to a camera lens, creating refracted light and a doubling effect, as well as some random rainbows.

The tool works with still photos, as well as for videos shot inside Snapchat. In videos, the film effect grabs the color distortions and even dust and scratch marks typical of viewing old films.

The VSCO lens is a free, sponsored lens that’s available inside Snapchat. With the VSCO lens selected from the lens carousel in the Snapchat camera, the different filter options are located on the right side of the screen.

The filter is a departure from the usual Snapchat lenses that turn your face into a puppy dog or a deer, instead creating a throwback to film and prisms, a classic photo manipulation technique that’s still around for digital (and made easier with accessories like the LensBaby Omni filter set). The filters, however, feel right at home among VSCO’s list of film-inspired presets and editing tools.

The sponsored lens will only be available through December 8 — but VSCO says users should stay tuned for more updates generated as a result of that partnership with Snap Inc. “Both VSCO and Snap believe in the power of self-expression and sharing the moments that inspire you,” VSCO shared in a blog post. “We’re thrilled to be making the new Analog lens available today on Snapchat and to continue our partnership with Snap — stay tuned for more here!”

The sponsored lens is available free. While both Snapchat and VSCO are available as free downloads, VSCO often releases the newest features to subscribers to VSCO X.

Have you ever been at the perfect location, but the Snapchat filter doesn't match your mood? Good news: The video-messaging application is now enabling its users to customize their own geofilters, but for a small price, according to Snapchat's latest blog post.

Snapchat users can now design their own filters for special events, such as birthday parties, or for their businesses. To start, users can design the filter using their favorite image editor. The company is providing templates that are compatible with both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to help its users get started. After designing the filter, the image must be submitted through the company's new online portal.

Snapchat users beware: Android screen-recording apps can immortalize your Snaps
Snapchat

Snapchat has turned itself into the messaging and entertainment hub for millennials with its messages that automatically erase themselves after a few seconds. Recently, the Huffington Post discovered that you can easily record Snapchat videos using a standard screen-recording app. Of course, these apps are only available on Android, so iOS users' Snapchats are safe from screen recordings.

Recording a Snapchat is shady, especially since the person on the other end probably doesn't know they're being recorded. It also screws Snapchat out of the dollar fee it charges to let people replay videos. For 99 cents, the newly added replay-for-a-fee feature gives people three replays for any Snaps they choose – though you can only replay any given Snap once. We don't recommend that you record Snapchat messages from others without their permission, but here's how it's done.

Polaroid starting to look like old self with new Snap instant camera
new polaroid starting to look like old self with snap instant cam featured

Polaroid is coming out with a new instant camera that blends the past and present. The Snap is a digital point-and-shoot camera with a built-in photo printer, and will cost $99 when it’s released later this year. The camera is being shown at IFA in Berlin.

Designed by the creative firm that created the Polaroid Zip and Cube, Ammunition, the Snap is an easy-to-use camera not unlike old Polaroid instant cams. As its name suggests, just snap a pic and print the photo. And like the analog instant cameras, there’s an optical viewfinder for framing (there's no LCD). This isn’t the first time Polaroid has made a digital instant camera, but it has a better design and, frankly, looks like a lot of fun.
